What type of doctor to see?

A few weeks back I started experiencing a pain in my right shoulder. Not a soreness, but a dull pain deep within my shoulder. The pain would come on when doing chest or shoulder work, and stop shortly after the end of my workout.

But, as of last week's chest workout my shoulder began hurting badly as son as I started doing my incline presses. I did a shorter and less intense chest workout, but the pain remained and radiated into my rear delt and up into my trapezius. This has continued and worsened every time I train chest and/or delts.

Today, since the end of my chest workout I have been in moderate pain. Who do I see - chiropractor, orthopedist, etc?

Thanks for any help! This sucks...

Hey Coopie!! I had simailar pain last year ...went to my chiroprator..He said brusitis...Told me to lay off till it feels better and Ice it in the eves...took a couple weeks and hasn't been back....I would suggest chiro first....

i am suffering from a shoulder injury right now also and have been for over 2 months. just becareful because if you keep training you will likely make it worse. and i would go to a real doctor (ortho) before a chiropractor anyday. tank....

Physiatrist

You might consult a Physiatrist in addition to an orhto doc.
Physiatrists have completed their residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R).

Get someone who works with Occupational Therapy, or Occupational Medicine. THese people see lots of overuse-type injuries, and injuries incurred on the job.

Hope you're feeling better soon!

I work in sportsmedicine and my initial hunch would be that you have impingement syndrome. However, that is just a hunch and without more info and actually being able to see and test the shoulder it is only speculation. My recommendation would be to see a top-notch orthopedic doc. There are tons of poor orthopedics, ton of decent orthopedics, but very few top notch orthopedics. Your chances of getting misdiagnosed or treated improperly is greatly compounded by the caliber of the doc. I see that you are from N.Y.. There is a great orthopedic shoulder doc in N.Y. named Stephen O'Brien. I am not sure what part of the city he is in as I am not familiar with the area, but if he is anywhere nearby he would be my top choice. I believe he does the Giants and other sports teams. I have met him several times, and he definitely knows his shit. Hope this helps.

I recently went through the medical community/insurance company merry-go-round and should warn you that unless you have a really liberal insurance company (that's a joke), you will have to go through your primary doc first for a referral. He or she should be able to guide you to the proper specialist for your condition. Unless you follow whatever path your insurance company requires, your out of pocket expenses will be much higher. And some treatment, ie. physical therapy, even if prescribed by the specialist, may not be covered by your plan, and they will nickle-and-dime you on every little thing. My PT even charged fifteen bucks for the hot towel that started every visit.

for my wrist, since it did not heal at all... i had to go back to my doc and then get referred to an ortho.... doesn't seem to be ligament either... so who knows at this point... at this rate i will be able to wear abercrombie soon.

For my shoulder i see a orthopedist. Got a couple of cortisone injections and no pain anymore ;)
