Your Thoughts on Starchy Carbs

I have found after years of tinkering with my diet that I look and feel my best when I severely limit the amount of rice/bread/pasta/potatoes I eat and consume most of my carbs in the form of fruits and fibrous vegetables. It seems I can eat the same amount of total carbs from fruit and vegetables as I would from the above starchy ones with less fat gain and I feel much better.

I was wondering if anyone has tried this with similar or different results and what everyone's thoughts are on the topic. I am interested in hearing what everyone thinks and maybe created some discussion about the diet.

I agree with that. But I don't put yams and sweet potatoes in the starch category.

I don't think I could survive without my starchy carbs man. I basically survive on Oats, Grits, Ezekial Bread, apples, and veggies so that would mean eating a shitload of apples and broccoli for me.

Polysaccharides with a low GI will result in less fat gain than with the fructose and glucose from fruit. It is better to eat (let's say) 200 grams of carbs from oats than 200 grams of carbs from bananas.

Ofcourse at the end of the day the total amount of kcal determines if you lose or gain fat. It could be that when you chose fruit and vegetables instead of starchy carbs that you consume less total kcal. It is "easier" to consume a lot of carbs eating pasta then when you eat apples.:)

In theory maybe but not in the real world. At least MY world.
Eating fruits as the only carb source (i do it from time to time for 2 to 3 weeks straight) ALWAYS makes me leaner. And i mean 350 g carbs minimum, mainly from apples and oranges. Even a few bananas.

No stomach bloat, healthy digestion (pectine and lots of well tolerated fibers), much less water retention.

And about the so called fact that fructose doesn't replenish glycogen as well as glucose... my workouts never suffered.

Maybe it has to do with blood type or something in your genes?

Like the good Dr. says it still comes down to Cals.
Less Cals = Leaner physique.

I wouldn't put oats (for sure) and grits in the starch category. Your bread (I don't know what it is) sounds like it 's probably more whole grain - not as processed as most breads, which is good.

But I believe there are "better" nutrients in veggies and fruits that are missing in most starches - fiber and phytochemicals (which can be cooked outta veggies). Organic is much better IMHO. Point is: pound for pound, there's much fewer carbs in most fruits and veggies than starches. It's MUCH EASIER to get a higher calorie count from starches.

If you've never tried Ezekial bread I would definitly recommend you look into it. It's made completely from whole grains and is a complete protein without any sugar. Actually made from a recipe found in the Bible. You can get it at Whole Foods, Fruitful Yield, Trader Joe's, or most health/organic food stores. Some of the cleanest carbs out there.
