i just finished talking to 2 guys in there late 40's . 1 has 32 in legs and the other has 34 in legs.:eek::eek: there are in good shape also .we started talking about train then they both proceeded to tell me what they do for legs

they said they workout together and when they do legs all they do for monster legs is squat for 2-3 minutes straight, depending on the weight.(135-225lbs)
then if there up to it they do extensions and leg curls. i couldnt believe it so they invited me to train legs with them tommorow.

they also said this is what got there legs to grow the most in all the yrs they have trained.

has any one ever heard of such a routine for legs? if anything it sounds like a good change a pace from time to time.

Great way for leg growth, you'll love it.

sounds intense for 2-3 mins straight thats a good amount of reps. wonder if this would work well for chest like bench press of deadlifts? thanks for posting that

magnum,

im assuming you tried or even currently doing the sqautting for 2-3mins.

if so can you offer up any experiences with it?

Now? lol no, but years ago yes. Got the idea from Tom Platz. Have also done 20 rep breathing squats. The idea is to take a weight that you can do 10 with then do 20. I know that sounds crazy, but what ya did was at the 10th rep you took deep breaths as many as needed and just kept doing one more rep taking more deeps breaths after each rep and believe me you needed them. This also took 2 to 3 min. It was fucking torture plan and simple.

Im trying this now, actually I'm back to it. They're not huge yet, but growing fast. I noticed that the harder I worked my legs (to failure) the smaller they got! I think I was just overtraining.

So I took a week off, and started longer sets of about 15 reps, lighter weight 5 sets. Like the OP's friends, some leg curls and extensions if I feel like I need them, light.

I did this because I noticed that on on de-load weeks, my legs grow like weeds. Then I read an article a while back that legs grow best at 80% of maximum stress, not at the point of failure like upper body muscles. I think it was on the MM site. I lift now until my legs are "rubbery", it took 3 sets before, now it takes 5. I think I'll increase the weight soon. Seems to work great. Best thing is, it is somehow making my calves grow too and the pump is incredible!

As to upper body, being inspired by the legs, I tried it here too. This doesn't work as well, at least it hasnt yet. Only been a couple weeks and I suspect I was overtrained. I recover better, but nothing drastic. But I'd say it's not worse than my usually heavy 3 or 4 sets to failure and allows me to really target the muscle rather than lifting the weight.

I think Ill stay with this for legs as long as it works, and vary the upper body training between light and heavy in a periodization style.

doing the DC widowmakers is just pure torture, my legs never grew so quickly but I started to dred leg day the day before my workout, its very tuff but does work, sometimes after finishing it felt like my throat was closing in on me

It works

I find it very unlikely its possible to build fairly lean 32" quads doing a max of 225 for squats, no matter how many times you do it. That will still require heavy weight, no matter how good your genetics are.

Sounds like torture but I can believe it works well.

If you think about it, its just another variation of the FST-7 style of training.

Filling the muscle with blood by doing high volume sets and therefore stretching the muscle facsia to allow more growth.

I can't imagine walking ups stairs the rest of the week to be much fun though :D

i recall reading a book about arnold, it stated that in his teens his older buddies would take him into the woods. they would bring weights, meat and women. barbaric training sessions. it said one time they squatted for 3 hours straight from one guy to the next. arnold was sore for 2 weeks and claimed his legs grew about 3/16 of an inch from that one session

Hey Magnum or any other "Smarter than me" people-Do you think this works for muscles like legs because of the different muscle fibers? I am an avid hunter and i notice that different birds that i shoot have different colored meats. Ducks fly a ton and have really dark breast meat as well as doves. But quail and pheasants that run more than they fly have white breast meat but darker leg meat. So could this be a coralation as to why this might work for our quads but not necessarily for bis or chest (Just examples). But humans spend a ton of time on our feet and our legs are getting continuous work. Just a thought.

I believe it. I've put almost an inch on my legs from 20 rep squats in about 2 months. granted, my legs have always sucked, so it wouldnt be the same as some of you pros putting on an inch

If nothing else, you will be adding a new workout style to your regimen so you should get something from the higher reps. There is absolutely no reason that you cant build muscle from high rep workouts as long as you constantly challenge the muscles with more reps & weight increases to provide a stimulus for growth. You cant help but get bigger & stronger. I dare say that there is but a few people who have ever tried to squat for 3 minutes straight. Throw in a little twist to this workout by adding a drop set ! Thats gonna burn real good.

When i first started working out i did the 20 rep squats, and maybe some leg extension or leg curls. My legs blew up. I had to buy all new pants. Stretch marks everywhere. They have stayed at about 25-26''. Which isn't huge, but im only 188lbs at 6'2''

but I am not a big fan of Arnold's legs though :)

I remember reading a t-nation article about this kinda stuff
had a routine working up to an 8 minute set of squats!

i cant remember the name of it, if anyone does, please post it

I actually started the 20 rep sets for squats two weeks ago, and can see a big difference. I'm thinking I'll do 2 weeks high reps, 1 week heavy 8-12 reps. Then start over with 20 reps.
