My grandmother is 87 and has a knee replacement that gives her a lot of trouble. She wants me to make her a workout that will just help with day to day life. Getting up from a chair, going up stairs, that sort of thing.

Any ideas on a workout regime for her?

Wow, that is really tough to do over the internet because without actually seeing what she is capable of doing safely it is hard to recommend anything. I do home physical therapy with geriatrics and what you are describing is my typical patient. Everything I do is personalized based on what the patients specific needs are while taking into consideration the specific level they are at. My best advice would be to have her see a physical therapist who can devise up a home program for her. If she has insurance they will cover it and if she cannot get to an outpatient clinic she has the option of home health or there are also outpatient clinics that make housecalls(basically what I am). Let me also re-emphasize something. It is very important that she be evaluated by a professional because safety is the key component and any exercise that she performs in the standing position has the potential to result in a fall if it is not performed correctly or if it is above her level.
 
I agree ^^^ Get her into a physical therapist.
 
I do part time physical therapy (NOT physIOtherapy) at an aged care facility ( I have worked with residents up to 95-97 years old, and have helped 10s of residents advance from beining in wheelchairs full time to walking with a walker), I may be able to help BUT it is hard to do this stuff over the internet, how long ago did she have the knee replacement?? let me know.

and you don't need alot of equipment, most of my work is done with resistance bands and chi balls and some light dumbells (1kg-4kg is typical)

but probaly your easiest bet is to take her to your local specialist
