this will explain it more in detail. tom im using a work labtop not my personal just to be safe.

I think I may have almost been infected with it.. It's already out there, but apparently they're gonna try and infect a bunch more people with it.. If you DO end up getting it, there's a few ways to tell - Your internet/comp will be slower, if you have automatic updates turned ON, it will turn them off, you won't be able to boot into safe mode, and lastly you won't be able to visit sites like mcafee.com or the windows update site..

I'm always on top of spyware and shit like that, but here's what happened with mine.. I'm lying in bed in dead silence, and all of a sudden I start to hear the spinning of my hard-drive go on and off.. It's a really faint noise, but it went on for a while, and I knew something was up..

So I check out my computer (I had a Firefox window open), and I see that the Yahoo toolbar was installed all by itself.. I get rid of it, and look a little further in my Program Files, and there was another thing installed that I didn't put there - some Shopping Save shit.. So I ran hijackthis to check my registry, and there were a few new things about Yahoo and IE Explorer..

I got rid of everything, and a couple days later I was reading an article on the virus, and it said about those things to look out for - so I check my Automatic Updates, and sure enough it was turned off, which I never did.. Everything is fine now, but I know I was almost infected with something.. I'm not sure if using Firefox helped me, but that 1st night I definitely heard my computer literally get hijacked - cuz that's what this virus does - it takes control of your computer, and the person on the other end can do bad things..

From what I read, having your computer turned off all day tomorrow will make no difference. It has a timer in the program set to go off, and the timer will not be affected when you turn off the power. It will know that its April 2 when you turn the computer back on and the program will then execute itself.

I don't know about you, but it's april 1st for me and my computer is doing just fine. I do believe that this is an internet rumor.

microsoft have offered 250,000dollars for information about whos responsible so if its a rumour its being taken seriously-unless microsoft invented it to force users to upgrade to their next piece of crap

you know that there are april fool's jokes running on big sites like google and places you wouldn't even expect, right? Did you catch the one posted on the main google.com page a few years back? How they were going to start giving away broadband for free, but you had to keep an ethernet cable permanently wired through your toilet? :star-;ars

Na it ain't a rumor - the thing is already out there, it's called the Conficker worm.. Millions of people are already infected with it, and with this type of bug, your computer can be controlled remotely without you knowing (besides your computer running like shit).. And whatever havoc they decide to cause with that power, well that's what everyone is worried about..

You can read a little more in-depth on it here:

interesting read. The funny thing is that some little nerd somewhere probably masterminded the whole thing. I mean really, who goes to the trouble to design such an elegant virus (if and only if they're not getting something like money or passwords or whatever) like that?

Yea it's crazy the kind of people there are out there.. This is the loner nerds way of feeling big, bad, and powerful - they gotta try and fulfill that urge somehow, lol.

hahaha... have you ever checked out a tech discussion board, before? Those guys are ruthless and mean! Internet rep is big time for them, though :) lol

by the way, check out google's april fools joke: **broken link removed**

Yea they're throwing around insults at eachother with 4 letter abbreviatons and codes, it's craziness lol!

Modern virus/worms go way past internet rep. The monetary gain possible is ridiculous. With control of this hypothetical botnet, a person could extort millions if not billions of dollars from multinational corporations wanting to avoid DOS attacks.

This is no rumor. I'm at work now and this e-mail was just sent around the office: DOI ADVISORY/NBC/OS/DOI wrote on 03/31/2009 09:01:17 PM:

Chief Information Officer
Department of the Interior

Subject: Conficker Virus Threat

Some of you may have seen or heard in the news that a computer
virus, Conficker, targeting Microsoft Windows is scheduled to
activate on April 1, 2009 (April Fools Day). Various news agencies
as well as security professionals are predicting the worm will be a
major threat to computers and networks.

In a nutshell, Conficker C is the latest variant of a computer virus
that first surfaced in October 2008 which specifically targets the
Microsoft operating system. Computers that have current software
security patches from Microsoft installed on them are expected to be
protected from the virus.

For your personal computers at home, I advise that you register to
receive automatic updates from Microsoft at this location: http:
//www.microsoft.com/protect/default.mspx .

Information from Symantec anti-virus is available at http:
//service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2009033012483648 .

Computers within Interior's bureaus and offices should already have
had the necessary software patches installed, however, some
incidents of potentially infected computers have been reported.
Action to install the necessary software patches was communicated to
bureaus and offices in October, 2008.

The Department is working with various groups, including the
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) United States Computer
Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) and Interior's bureaus and
offices, to monitor the network for signs of virus activity. We are
also coordinating with bureaus and offices to deploy a special piece
of software that is designed specifically to detect this new variant
of the Conficker virus on DOI's computers.

Symptoms that your system may be infected are not easily detectable
or apparent. If you feel that your system may have the Conficker
virus, employees are asked to contact your local IT support and your
respective bureau or office Computer Security Incident Response Team
(CSIRT). Depending on the deployment strategy and how each bureau
and office configures the special software you may receive a pop-up
notification window on your computer alerting you to the fact that
your system is potentially infected. If this occurs, please keep
your computer turned on but disconnect the network cable and contact
your IT support staff and CSIRT immediately to allow them to respond
to the incident and to perform analysis and corrective actions.

Additional information can be found on the US-CERT website at http:
//www.us-cert.gov/ .

Ok, lets lay-off us nerds here:D

They do it because they can and they enjoy the challenge of it. The same thing that drives IT peeps to become master hackers etc, is the same thing that drives each of us to become the best we can be physically.

The virus is already out there, it is not a hoax the experts speculate that on april 1st one of the controllers of the virus could 'turn on' any number of the slave computers and orchestrate a DOS or other attack against various systems.

As always, keep your anti-virus software and anti-spware/malware software up to date and patched and you should be ok.

I work at a Bluechip IT Company very well known around the world. It is for real folks. Makes wonder though if those jerks from MS came out with it themselves..

Having your Norton Anti Virus wont do nothing, not everyone will be hit, perhaps not even one, but it is real.

I would turn your computer off, power it off, meaning unplug the whole thing for a day or two.

Dont share any info whatsoever over your IP lines.

I am trying to find the article, however, a interac machine in Iceland ahas been hit and it's throwing out money :eek:

Chip

it's not as bad as the media makes it out to be, there have been strands of this worm out for months and months, i think back in november 2008 was the first version of the worm.
Think of it like this, the media announces a recall because 5 people got hurt from it, everyone and their momma hears about it and rushes to the hospital to get checked because they think they have it. These types of virus announcements on the news are just like that.

Don't get me wrong, this worm sucks ass and will jack you up, but the whole spreading isn't much worse than anything that is already around.

If you have a computer and do not have a virus scanner, spyware/malware scanner, and at least a router/firewall, you pretty much deserve to get a virus for being ignorant. We learn most from making mistakes!
