Yes, the issue revolved around improper form using DB's but even after I noticed it it was hard for me to correct it. I have a shoulder injury on the left side that influences it and even when I'm concentrating on nothing but form with lower weight it still does not feel like the path my left side follows in the positive and negative is anywhere close to my good side. For some reason using a bar corrects this for me and feels much better. I do what was already mentioned which is I concentrate mostly on the weaker side and make sure its not just doing a balancing act. I agree that most people it would be corrected using DB's, but it just wasn't working for me, thus the reason I said he should experiment with what works best for him.
