RONJON,
For pure cardio, ease on your body, and
results, I think it is hard to beat a bicycle
(indoor or out).
Right now, I do strictly cardio 3X per
week, Tuesdays and Thursdays; I either
hike or ride a street bike for a couple of
hours. And on one day of the weekend,
my wife and I will do a longer hike or ride.
But if I can't be outside on the week days and
I'm vanquished to the gym, this is what I do.
First a word about "spin" bikes. You can't
compare a spin bike to an average stationery
bike, they’re so different. Spin bikes have a
weighted fly-wheel in the front mimicking
the feel of an outdoor bike that’s actually
propelled by the pedals. When you tighten
the resistance and come out of the saddle,
you absolutely feel like you’re cycling up
a steep hill. And most importantly, spin
bikes are built for the rider to come out of
the saddle and grind on the pedals.
Here is the process . . .
First; find a spin bike.
Second; remove the seat and seat post,
making it impossible to sit down
Third; raise the handle bars all the way up
and out
Fourth; place your feet in the pedals (and
tighten harness if clipless)
Fifth, stand and pedal
Sixth; adjust the resistance to 60 - 90 RPM's
Seven; pedal, do not sit, for one hour
It's a good mental and physical exercise.
When I'm finished with this exercise (and I'm
fairly lean and muscular, the veins in my legs
and calves standout in bold relief naturally),
my legs and veins are pulsing and throbbing
like nobodies business and it's difficult to stand.
Try it, you just might like it.
