April 8, 2009 -- By activating the brown fat in your body, you could lose 9 pounds or more of bad white fat every year -- without having to eat less or exercise more.

Until recently, scientists thought adults didn't have brown fat. They thought it was there to help babies keep their bodies warm and went away as the body became more muscular.

But three new studies in the New England Journal of Medicine now show that more than half of adult men and women have enough brown fat in their bodies to burn off substantial amounts of white fat -- if the brown fat somehow is stimulated.

For example, Kirsi A. Virtanen, MD, PhD, of the University of Turku, Finland, and colleagues analyzed brown fat in five young men. One of the men had about 2.2 ounces of brown fat.

"If the brown [fat] in this example were fully activated, it would burn an amount of energy equivalent to approximately 4.1 kilograms [9 pounds]" of fat over the course of a year, the researchers calculate.

And that's a low estimate, as this assumes only 50% activation of the brown fat.
Brown Fat and Health

Scientists became aware of brown fat in adults because it's a problem for PET scans. Activated brown fat shines brightly in the scans, making it hard for doctors to see what they're looking for. Technicians have come up with several ways -- such as giving patients beta-blocker drugs -- to prevent brown fat activation.

As researchers looked into the mysteries of brown fat, they found that it is more closely related to muscle than to white fat. And recent studies suggested it might be possible to make the body produce more brown fat.

How does it work? Brown fat becomes activated when you're cold. Virtanen and colleagues took advantage of this in their study: The five volunteers underwent PET scans after spending two hours under-dressed in a cold room, with one foot soaking intermittently in a bucket of ice water.

Activated brown fat burns white fat as fuel. It's a very inefficient process that gives off heat -- and consumes a lot of fat.

New studies by Wouter D. van Marken Lichtenbelt, PhD, and colleagues at the University of Maastricht, Netherlands; and by Aaron M. Cypess, MD, PhD, of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, and colleagues show that:

* Obese people have less brown fat than lean people do.
* Men have less brown fat than women do.
* Older people have less brown fat than younger people do.
* People with high blood sugar have less brown fat than people with normal blood sugar.

"In other words, they found a direct correlation between the activation of brown adipose tissue and metabolic measures that indicate the presence or absence of good health," NIH researcher Francesco S. Celi, MD, writes in an editorial accompanying the studies.

Cypess and colleagues say it's likely that more than half of all men and women have at least a third of an ounce of brown fat in their bodies -- and that's just in the neck, where brown fat is most easily detected.

If fully stimulated, they calculate that 1.75 ounces of brown fat would account for one-fifth of a person's total resting energy expenditure -- and that's virtually all from burning off white fat, not sugar.

All of the researchers conclude that finding ways to promote brown fat activation will have a major impact on the obesity epidemic. Optimism on this front recently increased when it was discovered that one of the body's messenger proteins, BMP7, promotes growth of brown fat and might be the focus of new obesity therapies.

Gamma linolenic acid (GLA) is a good supplement to aid in burning brown fat.

Borage oil is probably the best source of GLA.

Interesting read. Are you saying that I should keep myself in a cold environment in order to burn fat?

remember the body wants to be at a certain temp and in a cold environment, calories(calories which are heat energy) will be used more in order to maintain that body temp.

I wondew if tren activates brown fat? The reason I say this is because there is quite a bit of brown fat in the neck region and while using tren my neck sweats all night.

A Fat That BURNS Fat?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many forms of fat are “healthy.” Omega 3 fatty acids have been shown to decrease inflammation and benefit circulatory system health. Omega 6 fatty acids are actually “inflammatory” fatty acids, which work to increase the pro-inflammatory leukotriene, LTB4. LTB4 augments the production of interleukin 1, which is called the endogenous pyrogen, and establishes the temperature set point of the body. An increase in the temperature set point will cause a subsequent increase in the metabolic rate.

The types of omega 6 fatty acids are linoleic acid, eicosadienoic acid, dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid, arachidonic acid, adrenic acid, docosapentaenoic acid, calendic acid, and gamma-linolenic acid. In this article, we will focus on the latter, gamma-linolenic acid.

Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is an essential fatty acid (EFA) in the omega-6 family that is found primarily in plant-based oils. EFAs must be obtained from food because they can’t be formed by the body in the way that nonessential fatty acids are. They are needed for normal brain function, growth and development, and bone health. They also stimulate skin and hair growth, regulate metabolism, and maintain the body’s reproductive processes.

Those who are overweight have an under-active fat known as brown adipose tissue (BAT). BAT is a type of fatty acid found in hibernating animals, and its primary purpose is to generate body heat. The method by which it does this is called metabolic uncoupling. It causes an uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation by carrying protons into the mitochondria across the cell membrane. Oxidative phosphorylation is a very potent method of storing energy that is much more effective than any other method in the body. When the proton enters the mitochondria, it changes the pH levels inside the mitochondria causing it to release its energy as heat instead of usable adenosine 5’-triphosphate (ATP).

GLA’s method of action in the body is quite unique because it has the potential to actually burn fat in the body. Its action on BAT is potentially its most exciting method of energy usage. It activates BAT, and in turn, burns calories. GLA also activates the ATPase metabolic process, commonly referred to as the “sodium pump,” and stimulates it to use up nearly 50 percent of the body’s total calories. Some studies have shown a relationship between obesity and low levels of GLA in the body. Indirectly, GLA also has the potential to raise serotonin levels, which can reduce appetite.

Another type of metabolic uncoupler is the highly effective and highly dangerous 2,4 dinitrophenol, known on the “street” as DNP. Knowing that a legal, nonlethal, and readily available DNP type product is available should have all of us salivating at the mouth...and highly interested in this exciting method of fat burning where we are actually using fat to burn fat.

Now, all of this information is essentially useless if you don’t know where to find concentrated forms of GLA. Lucky for us, GLA is found in many fatty acid products that are available at any nutrition store. Two fat sources in particular—evening primrose oil and borage oil—both contain high levels of GLA. Of the two, borage oil is more potent.

And to say people laugh when I tell them I always end my shower with cold water and have at least two cold bath a week... ;)

Trust me, once you get used to it, it's alright. :D

Have you seen any bodyfat loss doing this? (not that you have any bodyfat to begin with lol)

LMAO! :D

I'd like to have none, trust me... I wouldn't rely on such crazy methods otherwise...:p

Honestly I can't say for sure if it helps or not with fatloss. But what I know is that I ALWAYS feel great afterwards (much more pronounced feeling of well being than after a traditional warm shower).

And it tightens up the skin so much that I can look at myself in the mirror just after and think to myself "damn I look great today". LOL! :D Seriously it's nice to start the day on such a positive note!! ;)

Since then I've given up on taking a look at the mirror later in the day...

Any recommendations for how much GLA we should try to attain in a day?

An older study, but potentially another reason to supplement with gamma linolenic acid (borage oil, evening primrose oil):

"The researchers measured estrogen receptor expression in the subjects' tumor core biopsies and found that the combination treatment (GLA + tamoxifen) caused a greater reduction of estrogen receptor expression than that with tamoxifen alone."

(tamoxifen = nolvadex)

Well thats a good enough reason!

I think Id look in the mirror and say damn....my pecker looks smaller again today...shit!haha

no, you just blame it on the huge tree trunk thighs making it look small by comparison:D

good post!i was under the assumption that fat was fat.i had no idea that we have brown and white fat together.i just read in one of the posts above that someone stated a temperature change may affect the burning of it?(maybe i read it wrong).i remember YEARS ago Arnold said one of his "tricks" he used was to take alternating hot/cold showers right after working out.30 scnds hot-30 scnds cold-back and forth for a few minutes.does this have any relation to what you're writing about?i know it's probly a stupid question but now you've got me intrigued.also,do you have any recommended reading material on this subject?thnx again.
