Cereal And Milk Is The New Sports Supplement

ScienceDaily (May 15, 2009) — A bowl of whole-grain cereal is as good as a sports drink for recovery after exercise. New research has shown that the readily available and relatively inexpensive breakfast food is as effective as popular, carbohydrate-based "sports drinks."

Exercise physiologist Lynne Kammer, from The University of Texas at Austin, led a group of researchers who investigated the post-exercise physiological effects of the foods. Kammer and her team studied 12 trained cyclists, 8 male and 4 female. In contrast to many sports nutrition studies, however, the exercise protocol was designed to reflect a typical exercise session. After a warm-up period, the subjects cycled for two hours at a comfortable work rate, rather than the more frequently seen test-to-exhaustion.

"Our goal was to compare whole grain cereal plus milk—which are ordinary foods—and sports drinks, after moderate exercise," said Kammer. "We wanted to understand their relative effects on glycogen repletion and muscle protein synthesis for the average individual. We found that glycogen repletion, or the replenishment of immediate muscle fuel, was just as good after whole grain cereal consumption and that some aspects of protein synthesis were actually better".

"Cereal and non-fat milk are a less expensive option than sports drinks. The milk provides a source of easily digestible and high quality protein, which can promote protein synthesis and training adaptations, making this an attractive recovery option for those who refuel at home".

The researchers concluded that, for amateur athletes and moderately physically active individuals who are trying to keep in shape, popping into the kitchen for a quick bowl of whole-grain cereal with a splash of skimmed milk may be a smarter move than investing in a high-priced sports drink.

Kammer and her colleagues are scientists in the College of Education's Department of Kinesiology and Health Education. This study was supported by General Mills Bell Institute of Health and Nutrition.

You mean those scientists wearing the lab coats in the gatorade commercial are full of shit? Cereal remains one my all-time favorite foods and my most eaten food ever, besides maybe protein shakes.

I have an unhealthy addiction to FROSTED MINI WHEATS. That with some almond milk and I am good to go.

i guess skip was ahead of everyone.

Going back to the basics! :)

I guess that Dusty was on target with his pink Barbie cereal...whoda thunk? :D

Problem is I cant walk away without eating an entire box

Can't speak about recovery but meal 1 in the offseason always includes milk and cereal.

lol..."This study was supported by General Mills Bell Institute of Health and Nutrition."

wonder how they came up with such favorable results?

I assume they used Pasteurized milk--which is pretty much garbage

The Vast Difference Between “Milk” and Raw Milk as a Source of Calcium

Whenever people talk about “milk” they automatically refer to pasteurized milk, which is the only variety you can find in every grocery store in the U.S. However, the drawbacks of drinking pasteurized milk are so many they overshadow any potential benefit from the calcium it contains.

And, in fact, there’s serious doubt about the calcium in pasteurized milk because one of the worst side effects of pasteurization is that it renders much of the calcium contained in raw milk insoluble… This can lead to rickets, bad teeth, and nervous troubles, for sufficient calcium content is vital to children. Additionally, with the loss of phosphorus also associated with calcium, bone and brain formation can suffer serious setbacks.

Pasteurization also destroys part of the vitamin C contained in raw milk, and encourages growth of harmful bacteria.

Worst of all, however, dairy products from cows treated with Monsanto‘s genetically engineered bovine growth hormone (rBGH or rBST) could sharply increase your risk of cancer and other diseases, especially in children.

These detrimental side effects are not associated with drinking RAW milk, however.

In fact, raw milk is an excellent source of not only calcium but also a number of other nutrients such as vitamins, enzymes, and beneficial bacteria like lactobacillus acidophilus.

One other significant issue may actually be the species of cow that the milk is taken from. Milk from older cows, Jerseys, Asian and African cows may not cause problems, while milk from new cows like Holsteins, which has a mutation on one of the amino acids of casein, causes many people to not tolerate it well.

Raw Milk happens to taste great as well. As for the "whole grain" cereal..well, I'll leave that one alone for now...

I've always said Cinnamon Toast Crunch HAS to be anabolic! ;)

LOL must be....

Problem is I cant walk away without eating an entire box

Umm yeah. I sound like Forest Gump afterwards..."I ate some...." And Tami is looking at an empty box, empty carton of milk and an empty tupperware bowl.

Can't speak about recovery but meal 1 in the offseason always includes milk and cereal.

THAT is a great way start the day.

Mercola? LOL!!!:confused::rolleyes:

Yeah, it does make you wonder, but I may pick up a box of Lucky Charms anyway....

I guess we can file this under the "everything old is new again" adage.I guess i can go back to eating Golden Grahams now,man i Love that shit:D

YES!

My favorite post-workout meal is back!

1# Box of Fruity Pebbles
1 1/2# Quarts of Whole Milk w/ 1 cup of pwd Milk added..
1# Large Tupperware Bowl
1# Salad Shovel/Spoon

Eat in bliss & enjoy the nap after.. :D

Ahhh early twenties were a silly time......lol

Kashi complete protein cereal, I love it.

I eat that with some non flavored protein powder with some cinnamon, and love it.breakfast daily

When they are comparing milk and cereal to "sports drinks" what do they mean? Are they comparing the milk and cereal to Gatorade or a carb and protein based sports drink like muscle milk?

None of this is really surprising - I imagine having a protein shake with milk and cereal is just as good as a protein shake and 50 grams of dextrose when you are talking about PWO nutrition.
