Cerosis of the Liver. Best friend.....

Just got a call from my best friend. Doctor says he has Cerosis of the liver. Long time alcoholic and pain pill abuser. Have been clean from pills for the last 5 years but drinks often. Doctor said 0 alcohol and lots of water. Then they will see what happens in a few months. Any suggestions for my friend? Sad, sad, sad. 2 kids and a wife. Any vitamins or supps that could help? God bless my best man!

He may need medical intervention to quit drinking. I have rarely seen an alcoholic kick the habit safely on his own. There are serious life-threatening problems that can (and often do) arise when alcoholics stop. It is a very very physical dependence.

As far as liver supps, liv 52 is world famous. I have heard lots of god things about Synthergine (I think thats what it called) from Synthetek.

Your friend needs to detox in a hospital. Librium is sometimes used but a Valium protocol is the most used now along with Robaxin and Compazine. He can detox in a hospital setting with I.V. fluids, etc. in 3-4 days. Did the dr. do a Liver Biopsy?Cirrhosis can only be diagnosed via Biopsy. Depending on what type of cirrhosis he has and how far it has progressed, if he stops drinking now he could be O.K. for many years to come.

Best advice I can give is follow the doctors orders when it comes to detoxing. The doctor knows his medical history and can create a treatment plan.

Your friend should consider an inpatient facility. That way he can concentrate on his treatment. Then he should do IOP or OP treatement and join AA. Even if he doesn't agree with AA 100% it's still a good support group. He should go to a meeting every day for a few months.

He should also get a therapist to talk about why he drinks and ways he can cope with the temptation.

If he doesn't have the money/insurance look for public programs.

Alcohol withdrawal, even tho it's not really looked at like say heroin withdrawal, is actually worse because it can be fatal.. He must have been a pretty heavy drinker to have cirrhosis, so if he suddenly stops he could get the DT's.. That's when someone can die from alcohol w/d, and the chance is pretty high too if he doesn't seek medical attention.. The suboxone recommendation - not a good one, that's an opiate blocker.. Maybe you're thinking of naltrexone (also an opiate blocker), but that's for maintenance after you're sober.. In the hospital for w/d they would start you on some type of benzo - i.e. valium, xanax, klonopin, ativan, etc...

My grandfather died of liver cirrhosis when I was 1 years old. He got it from eating something dirty. If your friend's condition gets worse, he will need a liver transplant. I have had one 2 years ago and let me tell you it was hell on earth. If he starts to take care of himself now, he turn out ok in the end. Hope things go well for him. Liver transplant is a last option and let me tell you, it saps you mentally and physically, let alone the post operative pain you go through.

First off I wish everyone would stop telling him what to go and get VS what he should read up on. Organs are nothing to mess with when your going through detox. The wrong supp or drug can make it worse.

Get the Biopsy completed, then seek a western doc thoughts for treatment then find a good Chinese med for his thoughts....a lot of liver or any other organs can be healed by proper balance of CHI...no Im not crazy my brother is a Chinese med doc and he is helping me with my liver heat...he has helpedmany and I have seen many healed through the right herbs but I would get both sides and choose what you feel is right for you.....

One of the top inpatient rehab hospitals in the country detoxes alcoholics with phenylbarbitol (spelling??). It's a red elixir and the dose is decreased each day. A 6 day detox is what they communly use.

Ativan is probably going to be his best way to prevent dt's with alcohol. It works on the same neural pathways as alcohol. As far as the pain medication addiction, I could tell you that when I quite cold turkey after a good few months of what became about 60 mg of oxycodone/day. It was hard to get up for a day or two. Mostly from just slight chills, tiredness, and ACHY joints. Phenibut and getting back outside were the two biggest things that helped me. Now my addiction was miniscule in comparison to some in both quantity and length of time, but I can understand now why its hard to get off the stuff even if you want to.

I disagree. Chinese meds are the last thing his friend needs for his situation. I've taken those so called chinese meds and they are garbage IMO. My grandfather was also taking those meds and it didn't do him any good and he passed away. Way to go chinese meds........NOT.

I think they do have their efficacy. Just because your grandfather didn't have much of a result with them doesn't mean they can't replace a medicine one is using.

Not speaking specifically of your case, but I have seen people who buy cheap brands and don't have any idea how the product works. When someone is buying supplements, you really need to know the source from which it comes. A lot of supplement companies are out for a quick buck and nothing else. Because of this, the purity is less than optimum. In order to be effective the purity must be their, and usually finger printed versions of these supplements are not great. I wouldn't look exclusively to these herbs, as they may not work for a host of reasons on an individual basis. Im sure some of which is genetic. But it is comforting for me to know that you can get medicines derived naturally from the earth and not have to go drive and see a doctor, whom will prescribe you something after a 15 minute exam. It's of no fault to the doctor of course, due to the busy patient schedule, but thats a whole other issue.

He went to go see his doc who specialized in chinese medicine for a few years before he passed away. During that time, he never got better. Hell, I went to go see a doc that specializes in herbs and chinese meds before i had my liver transplant and he gave me a list of herbs, fruits and vegetables to mix and make into a sort of soup and drink it. I did as he said and it did absolutely nothing for me. Conventional western medicine is why I'm still alive today after my liver transplant.

since i tore my rotator cuff, i been on the feel sorry for myself kick. been drinkin like a fish, basically from 10 til midnight. every day. the rest of the time im passed out. i hate this! i wanna get back to workin out and gettin in shape. i cant quit, and im ashamed of what ive become. i try and use this board as incentive, but i guess i'm weak. i hope yr friend gets sobered up safely. i tried on my own, but damn. without intervention, it's tough.
