Im pretty sure its now a fact that a decrease in cals leads to a longer life. Ive read this in Life Extension as well as other places. Now this sucks for our sport and I could never do this but I had a ?. Would this be the same for a dog? Obvioulsy we would want our pets to live as long as possible. My dog is small and only has 1 1/4 cup of food daily, so maybe dropping it to 3/4-1cup would increase the life :) lol sorry but i had to ask.

it could also be said that by driving fewer miles one could increase the longevity of their auto :p

idk if its the same for dogs, but i have 3. a cockerspaniel(18 years old) a ciao-retriever mix(3 years old) anda bouvier which is 4 years old. i leave food out for them all day and they eat whenever theyre hungry, and i feed them table food. based on how old the cockerspaniel is living, i dont think it would decrease their life span much.

Is longevity really better than quality, how would you like to live on less than half the food you eat now? You already said not for you so why would it be for them. If you really want to increase the longevity of your dogs life start a RAW diet. Almost any health problems with go away, and a small dog can be fed on very little money. You can get away with feed 2%-3% of the dogs total weight. That would be less than .5lb a day and you can generally get a case (40lbs.) of chicken backs from a local butcher for $14-$16, then add some some veggies and maybe sweet potatos and you just fed your dog for almost three months for less than $25 and it's EXTREMELY HEALTHY for them.

While I agree with you on raw food, I don't believe vegetables and/or grains are necessary in a dog's diet. Dogs are obligate carnivores, therefore the BARF diet (bones and raw food) is sufficient for their needs.

"Often advice is given about feeding all sorts of different vegetables, grains, vegetable oils and other things that dogs would not choose to eat in the wild. We think because they do eat these things since that is what WE feed them, that they have evolved into some sort of omnivore but again that is also not a fact but more of a myth. What bears reminding is that dogs are obligate carnivores that will eat what they need to fill their stomachs and survive.

BARF diet: http://www.barfworld.com/

I have seen older animals come to new vigor of life after being on this diet, it is superior to commercial pet foods and has a positive effect on long-term health.

Well hold on a second. I did not look at the study but I would imagine there is a HUGE correlation with people who have a reduced calorie diet and their overall bodyfat percentage. And bodyfat percentage has been proven to be a definitive indicator of lifespan. So can we really say that it's the reduced calorie level or their BMI?

Excellent.

:)

I'd say it's true.. It's like the more calories you burn, the more wear and tear you're putting on your body.. Just in general tho, when you take the whole population into it, cuz you're gonna have individual cases that are different.. It's already proven that eating alot of red meat decreases your life span compared to people who don't, which I've seen many examples of.. And just thinking off the top of my head - wrestlers, football players, bodybuilders and big guys in general seem to die earlier than the average of 78.. I wouldn't wanna live into my 80's anyways so I don't really mind..

im inclined to believe its overall health as well. I think it would make sense that overeaters who dont excercise (ie damn near all of america) would not live as long as someone who watched their cals and excercised.

So as long as your dog isnt too pudgy id let him be :)

As far as feeding your dog chicken backs, do a little research. Alot of vets say chicken bones can splinter and cause internal bleeding. On the other hand I had an incredible Lab names Shadow that could eat a whole chicken in about thirty seconds and she did'nt even get the shits. PS the chicken was my dinner not hers, she was just really fast.

Original study...

YEARS ago I read one of the original studies that was done on mice. I can't remember how "hypo-caloric" they were, but it was perhaps 15% below their daily requirements. The mice did live significantly longer.

The main hypothesis behind hypocaloric diets and longevity is basically that there is a decrease in free-radicals from the food being broken down. Not to get into the extent it deserves, but free-radicals are basically the bottom line culprit behind most diseases (to at least get the ball rolling for that disease). Free radicals have equated to "rust" to the cell, it's an unstable oxygen molecule that "bounces" from cell to cell disrupting their electrical balance also making them unstable.

i think it would be the same for any animal. i know its true for mice.

In those calorie studies it was also the higher calorie diets created more energy expenditures in the body, which in turn over many years, caused the body to break down faster and leave it more prone to aging and the many common illness that appear to come with aging.

I suppose, you an also be hit by a bus tomorrow.

I want to know where they got the subjects for their research. I'm not talking about mice, either. They must have gone to zimbabwe or magadishu where the people are starving. How long did ghandi live, anyways? He was always fasting. Figures that he'd live to be 125, yes? And bro, don't starve your dog.

Yes but you need to not be malnourished, so nutrient rich food and you need to eat 60% - 66% of your lean maintenance. Maximum lifespans in animals and now primates can be extended by more then 30% - 50% w/ lower aging related disease and ailments. You stay young longer.

This has been demonstrated in dogs as well. The key for your dog is that his food be nutrient dense so he isn't malnourished and cut his calories by 1/3.

But don't do this to the poor dog. Let him enjoy life ...otherwise he will go through life always hungry.

No it does not mean you can't retain muscle.

Alternate day fasting works the same it seems. Day 1 no food, Day 2 eat freely ...so you can maintain your bodyweight.

There is also a version where you eat around 15% of maintenance on fast day and then freely on non-fast day. The advantage is that IGF-1 levels don't drop too low BUT this may inhibit some longevity (because the IGF-1/insulin pathway appears to be involved in damage which leads to aging).

Yes this version can be done. I have been doing this for the last month. :)
