Do You Throw Out Your Insulin After 30 Days?

Quick question: do you stick to the 30-day rule for tossing insulin, or keep using it if it’s been refrigerated? Wondering if anyone's noticed a difference in effectiveness past the expiration.

Not saying this is correct but I keep mine in the fridge and don't throw it out until it's empty.

I do the same ^^

If its refrigerated it should last a long time, far longer than 30 days.

If its not refrigerated, then it'll probably lose potency fast

No. I only use a small amount when I use it, so I'd be wasting a lot if I threw it.

As long as it doesn't go cloudy, it'll still be good to go for some time.

My cat is diabetic and only uses 5iu morning and 5iu at afternoon. If I did the 30 day thing what a waste. I like the get a vial every 3 months not every 30 days.

Expiration dates usually have little to to do about potency.

They place the 30 day (Beyond Use Date) or BUD in the pharmacy field for different reasons. Once Insulin is opened, 30 days for multi dose is standard bc they worry about sterility. Potency decreases a little over time but not enough to care about.
As long as you use alcohol on the vial etc,, and syringe sterile etc,,, I wouldn't worry about it. I keep mine for a year easy. Look for any particulates in the solution or cloudiness.

I have been using my current insulin for about 2 years :D It's been out of the fridge the entire time and it hasn't lost any potency.

It’s also assuming it’s being used by diabetics using it more regularly, traveling with it/keeping it out of the fridge.

I see you like to live on the wild side.

That's actually great to know though. Good data point.

The diabetics i know that use it don't carry it around with them. They leave it at home and use it there.

I’m convinced expiration dates are used as a money making scheme
Profit is certainly a driving factor i would think. As a businesses job is to make money. They are not there to be a charity. But making sure there is no way liability will bite them in the butt is another way to make profit.

I've had vials last months in my cabinet. Fridge is better sure
