Exercise selection for beat up meat heads

Try a dumbbell shrug in front. This is the best video I could find but I prefer a dumbbell. Start with it at your side and rotate the weight in front while pulling up. The pec connects to the clavicle, that is where you should feel it. All upper chest and no pain on the shoulders.
OK yeah that worked. Appreciate it. It's not as satisfying as a pressing movement, but I'm in no position to bitch about it. Right now I'm stuck doing a bunch of low weight stuff with really slow negatives.

I think it was Athlean X who demonized upright rows, but I personally still do them / like doing them with dumbbells and this variation is good, just make sure you pay attention to the common mistakes part regarding the elbows not pointing back.

For those like me not able to bench press without pain in the shoulders (I can´t do normal overhead presses or dumbbell pullovers either) try switching to a Converging Chest Press machine, my gym has a Precor one and I love it, I can really feel the pecs working and have no pain after using it.

Speaking of the shoulders, I do these exercises as rehab every day and they do help:

I find Andrew Lock to be very knowledgeable on spine and shoulder related issues.

@slesh is the perfect person to answer this. He's about as beat up of a meathead as they come.

Man you just gotta find a gym with solid pin and plate loaded machines. And also really work on your mind muscle connection. I used to hold my nose at the basic bitch brands like Cybex, Life Fitness, etc but if you have the patience and focus on the isolation of the muscle you can really beat the muscle up whether you going heavy or doing drop set/burnouts. I literally haven't picked up a barbell or dumbbell other than to do lateral raises or bicep curls in years lol.

I do these with my trap bar....these and side laterals (with no trap movement at all) is the only way I can train my fucked up shoulders....

For deadlifts I do rack pulls as a substitute and for squats I use a squat machine.
I do rack pulls starting from just above my kneecaps and squeeze my scapula together hard . I can tell some people think its a fake deadlift. I dont give a shit what anyone thinks though.

Started because I herniated a disk doing regular Deadlifts.

1. Slow, very slow, controlled reps.
2. Lots of stretching. It may seem like a waste of 15 minutes. And save the preworkout stims until after stretching. Lengthening your muscles you are about to train, not only may help prevent injury, but actually has the theoretical potential to build more muscle. Could be bro-science, but a lot of big dudes were doing deep tissue fascia stretching on their quads before their leg workout at World Gym in FreakVille, La La Land! It’s excruciatingly painful but worth a try if you’re at a sustained plateau and a part time masochist.
3. 20 rep sets on all leg exercises.

I love all the old equipment from Cybex, Life Fitness, Flex Fitness, Hammer Strength, etc. - I'd take it over Prime, Panatta, etc., any day of the week. That's the shit that built my physique. I don't use barbells for anything and only use dumbbells for front raises and lateral raises.

I’m beginning to appreciate them more and more. Reds is fucking filled with all the old Body Masters equipment and I love it.

A bit off topic, but after literally not being able to dips for over two decades, I attempted them about six months ago and there was only "some" discomfort. I progressed slowly, and now I can do 15 DEEP bodyweight dips with zero pain. I don't push my luck with them but I make sure that I do one set every workout.

I find dips aggravate my shoulders but the dip machine doesn’t. I think it’s down to the increased stability and also I’m more able to change body position, making it more comfortable

Speaking of old school. All three of these plate loaded chest presses are amazing and like 30-40 years old lol. All y’all need to get at least one lift in at Reds before you kick the bucket.

Many years ago I dated a girl who was getting her master's at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX. There was a place down there called something-something Racquetball Club and they had a gym that was identical to this one. Tons of old equipment and it was the first place I saw 100lb. plates in real life.
