Back in the day they didnt have all the supps we have now a days. So for the guys who were hitting it hard back then you had to eat all solid foods to get your protein and carbs. Now for the same guys who are lifting now a days do you use protein powders to make up for daily protein needs or do you stick to real food??? Do you feel that protein powders work just as good as real food. Thanks lets hear it

C'mon now! That's like my kid sees a Model T and asks if that's what I learned to drive in

I graduated in 1971 and knew about steroids then, just didn't see any need to use them. I got another heavy exposure through a powerlifter I worked with in 1977. I'm pretty sure there were bb'ers using them in the 60's. So if some one were 20 (age they probably "knew" something) in 1962, which was probably a time steroids weren't around, that would make them 63 today.

Not at all being disrespectful, but maybe Otis can enlighten us here. I think the majority of us on the board have been around since 'roids have been.

I knew there was difference between "types" of protein but didn't really understand the difference (in the 70's and pretty much through the 80's). I was taught tha for pre-contest (back in the mid-80's) you relied on "food" not powders. At least that was my experience.

I'm not that old, but I do remember back in the late 70's & early 80's the protien powders where disgusting, at least the ones I was using. They were just egg & milk protien.
Maybe there was more varieties, however I had to rely on my mother to get it because I was only 13 or 14 or something like that.

Milk and egg protein and some nasty soy protein that made you shit cement if you weren't careful. Stick to whole foods and supplement with powders.

Supplements

Thats why their called "supplements" because they supplement your regular or needed diet of real food. They will and were never ment to replace real whole foods.

Lets bring back some memories, powdered cardboard.

craetine has been around since the 80's I remeber Twinlab made it. It didnt get popular until like 1996-97 when EAS popluraized it. Protien powders,Amino Acids and liver tabs have been around forever.

check it out creatine been around since the 1800's

In 1832, creatine, a nitrogenous molecule, was identified in meat by the French scientist Chevreul. Later, in 1847, Lieberg concluded that the accumulation of creatine in the body is directly involved in producing muscle work. The investigation of creatine supplementation began in the early 1900's using creatine extracted from meats. Synthetic creatine production began in the early 1960's as did it's use for anaerobic benefit, mainly in the Eastern block countries of the former Soviet Union. Several British Olympic athletes were, reportedly, supplementing with creatine before the 1992 Olympic games in Barcelona. The Olympic games in Atlanta were jokingly referred to "The Creatine Games" as a number of athletes supplementing with creatine were awarded gold medals. High profile, professional athletes, such as St. Louis Cardinals' slugger Mark McGwire and Denver Broncos' quarterback John Elway, have also shown their devotion to this sport supplement. Why? Because it works.

I am 34 years old - by no means an "old timer"! But, I began working out seriously in 1989, and even back then I learned to use supplements. I used to take some old Weider crap and then upgraded to Champion Nutrition. They had a product called "Metabolol", and it tasted much better than the Weider Mega Mass.

I stuck to lots of clean foods and made some nice solid gains through hard work and experimentation with sets, reps, exercises, and routines. I used the Metabolol in conjunction with lots of Aminos and I was happy with the results.

In the 60's, we used Bob Hoffmans protein powder and a lot of liver tabs. I still use powders and MRP's but I wouldn't swear I need them since I'm 100% natural now (Age and health)I still try the new over the counter stuff looking for an "edge". I will say that I'd be hard pressed to name a few that did much. A guy can dream though.

thanks

I just wanted to thank everyone for the replys. Sometimes i can get carried away with taking protein powders. I dont replace real food for the powders but but i will takw 10 scoops a day 224 grams just in powders.. maybe ill cut back and add in even more real food. I was talking to a guy the other week who won a few top bb shows and he says not to take any powders and just stick to real food. Thats how he did it when he was at his best, but back then they didnt have the supps we have today. I guess you cant beat good old real food.

Are they worth taking at all??

anyone remember orange flavored pre -digested protein for the 70's. J.R.

Somehow he made me feel like a Senior Citizen.

I am from the new age now and I want to give my opinion- I use a top quality protein for three of my meals with oats added in and chicken and brown rice for the other 3 - it works well and it is very convenient b/c I work and go to school and sometimes my kitchen is a mess so its tough to cook not to mention its 2 flights down from my room- whey protein is better than any other type of protein even egg whites b/c it has a higher biological value(?) I think and it tastes good but truly it does not fill you up which can be a problem so I add eggwhites in place of a scoop of protein sometimes to make protein pancakes but it is just the convenience- I use up to 10-12 scoops of protein a day- and one of the trainers I used to work with consumed almost all of his diet thro protein and was pretty nuts, so I believe protein powder is a great meal replacement- just check out some of these pros diets to see how much of it they consume--- its a lot.
