It is that time of year again, Spring Gobbler season! I love me some turkey hunting, didn't hunt much last year (divorce had my head spinning) but will hit it hard this year. Any other Turkey Fanatics here?
Boom , i hunt in south west Mississippi , they probably average 16-18lbs , you will get an odd monster in the 20+lbs range. My personaly best is a 23lb stud , we aged him at only a couple years old , he had short narrow spurs and a very thick 9" beard , he wasen't realy thick but very tall , I hate having taken him , I would have loved to seen what he may have gotten to in a year but our reagon was heavly clear cut that year so he probably would have left or died anyhow
There is absolutely nothing better than spring gobbler season. Beautiful mornings listening to the woods come alive then that loud boom of the monster bird off in the distance as the sun pops up.
You know they are there, it's not like deer hunting where you freeze your butt off only to see some squirrels and a random crow or two.
I love using slate calls by Cody (you can look them up online). I've used a lot of different scratch calls in my day but nothing has came close to the quality of their calls. I do like some of the aluminum calls too but they are deafening.
Like Gun, we have easterns (i'm near Tallahassee) and they avg about the same as Gun said. I rarely weigh, but i TRY and only shoot 3yr if not 4yo birds, and i judge by spur length. Biggest i've killed was 1 5/8", dunno how many bigger than 1", quite a few. I hunt my farm, about 900 acres, so i'm able to target specific mature birds and hunt them, quite humbling actually, those really big boys are pretty much impossible to call. Found that roosting him, then getting in really early w/ a full strut mount is about the only way to draw them in, they do not like another bird challenging their dominance.
Here in the north east, no bird killing till may 1rst, but the ice will be gone soon, and there will be plenty of perch to catch before turky season! Good luck guy's.
