Going in for hernia surgery this morning. Wonder how long recovery will be.

FSM

FSM:

Several types and severities of Hernias and a couple different surgery options. Really need more info. Minimum of six weeks, possibility of six months.

Just had surgery 12 days ago, inguinal hernia. Had the surgery on a wed, was mowing the lawn by sat., having sex on mon. Had the staples removed thurs. 9days after the surgery started lifting fri. Have not trained legs yet cause squats are gonna be kinda hard. I heard a lot of horror stories from friends, it wasnt that bad never really had any pain more discomfort.

everyone responds differently to this surgery it seems...i had mine 5 years ago the doctor was a surgeon in a top hospital in nyc and my recovery was very slow. its really a pretty simple procedure so the amount of doctor error is minimal, i think its just really varies person to person when it comes to healing time and pain.

yeah. Mine was very painful. Having my heart attack and ICD implanted in my chest was a cake walk compared to the pain I suffered after the hernia surgery and the recovery time. I did have 3 hernias repaired at the same time though, so that probably played some part. I spent about 2 weeks drugged up on oxycodone because the pain was so bad. Hydrocodone didnt do me much good.
Having the surgery done by endoscope is much better than the open method they say. I had both done. I had scope on the 2 inguinals and open on my umbilical. In the long run though it was the inguinal hernias surgery recovery that was the worst.

there is a disagreement between doctors on whether the open or laproscropic is better. some studies have shown that hernias repaired laproscopically reoccur more often than those repaired by the open method. my doc gave me the option and after he told me that he believed the open repair was a stronger fix i went with the open. besides the scar for an open repair when done by a good doctor is only about an inch and half. when you have the laproscopic they often go in from three different locations so its really not that big of a deal you are talking either three scars of a half inch or one of an inch and a half

Yeah, there is a big debate on that. From what I read though, and from what my doctors told me, the laprascopic is better for inguinal surgery but for umbilical it is not. Thats why we used both metods. Im sure they will be using mesh with you? My inguinal repair held up good, both of them. My umbilical did tear again slightly, but is much smaller than it was originally and hasnt grown at all in many years.
I wouldnt get too wraped up in debating between laprascope or open, and it sounds like you made your choice and youll be fine.

I would say mine took about a good 6 months before I could start training hard agan and a full year before I could train abs directly without it pulling and hurting. so everyone is different.

The first 4 days for me was the worst though.....after that not so bad.

So yours was umbilical? I had one of those too and it took me a long time.

that was about the same time it took me to feel 100 percent. and maldorf i believe both methods are good repairs as long as the mesh is used

Yeah, thats what I came away with. the mesh is crucial. I had it on all 3 of mine. Even with the mesh though, my umbilical tore again some.

bottom line is hernias suck even after repair. a lot of scar tissue forms and i feel some nerve pain in mine every once in a while whether its just a real cold day or i stretch my abs real well

Well I guess I am a lucky one. I have 7 friends who had the surgery and they all told me how bad the recovery was. My scar is about 4 inches long and I know they used mesh, doc said I have a 1% chance of it failing. Trained again today, 13 days post surg, almost feeling back to normal. Still a little tender and swollen. Got my bench press up to 275 before i felt the pressure in the hernia area.

I had mine taken out when I was a kid. When I lift heavy, never had a problem but was told to be careful.

I had an inguinal repair. If they just sew it up from the outside it has a much greater chance of reoccuring, recovery is also much longer. With the mesh you are stronger than before, and recovery is MUCH shorter. My doc let me go back to lifting as heavy as I liked after 2 weeks.

Here is the problem, a hernia is a genetic weakness in that tissue, and if they just sew it up everything is just as weak as before (if not weaker). With the mesh it reinforces the entire area.

There is a downside to the mesh, there are staples that hold it in place, these can cause some pain. Training abs a lot has help reduce the staple pain I would occasionaly get. I'm 12 years post op, the mesh was VERY new when I had it done.

Mine hurts sometimes when I first get up in the morning, the inguinal one. after I take a shower though and move around for a half hour or so the weird feeling goes away.

Dont be fooled into thinking that area is really strong, because I tore mine again and it had the mesh. it was my umbilical one though, and those are notorious for tearing again.

Ive been having this recent groin pain from doing sprints first thing in the cold morning. But after reading what inguinal hernia is i am now PARANOID! My gf thinks am hypochondriac...i agree as well.

Does the inguinal hernia hurt 24/7? and did you guys feel a groin pain also?

the inguinal hernia happens where the abdominal wall meets the hips, you can check yourself for one if you know how, doing that is beyond the scope of my post :D
