Just had surgery 12 days ago, inguinal hernia. Had the surgery on a wed, was mowing the lawn by sat., having sex on mon. Had the staples removed thurs. 9days after the surgery started lifting fri. Have not trained legs yet cause squats are gonna be kinda hard. I heard a lot of horror stories from friends, it wasnt that bad never really had any pain more discomfort.
everyone responds differently to this surgery it seems...i had mine 5 years ago the doctor was a surgeon in a top hospital in nyc and my recovery was very slow. its really a pretty simple procedure so the amount of doctor error is minimal, i think its just really varies person to person when it comes to healing time and pain.
yeah. Mine was very painful. Having my heart attack and ICD implanted in my chest was a cake walk compared to the pain I suffered after the hernia surgery and the recovery time. I did have 3 hernias repaired at the same time though, so that probably played some part. I spent about 2 weeks drugged up on oxycodone because the pain was so bad. Hydrocodone didnt do me much good.
Having the surgery done by endoscope is much better than the open method they say. I had both done. I had scope on the 2 inguinals and open on my umbilical. In the long run though it was the inguinal hernias surgery recovery that was the worst.
there is a disagreement between doctors on whether the open or laproscropic is better. some studies have shown that hernias repaired laproscopically reoccur more often than those repaired by the open method. my doc gave me the option and after he told me that he believed the open repair was a stronger fix i went with the open. besides the scar for an open repair when done by a good doctor is only about an inch and half. when you have the laproscopic they often go in from three different locations so its really not that big of a deal you are talking either three scars of a half inch or one of an inch and a half
I would say mine took about a good 6 months before I could start training hard agan and a full year before I could train abs directly without it pulling and hurting. so everyone is different.
The first 4 days for me was the worst though.....after that not so bad.

that was about the same time it took me to feel 100 percent. and maldorf i believe both methods are good repairs as long as the mesh is used
Yeah, thats what I came away with. the mesh is crucial. I had it on all 3 of mine. Even with the mesh though, my umbilical tore again some.
So yours was umbilical? I had one of those too and it took me a long time.
bottom line is hernias suck even after repair. a lot of scar tissue forms and i feel some nerve pain in mine every once in a while whether its just a real cold day or i stretch my abs real well
I had an inguinal repair. If they just sew it up from the outside it has a much greater chance of reoccuring, recovery is also much longer. With the mesh you are stronger than before, and recovery is MUCH shorter. My doc let me go back to lifting as heavy as I liked after 2 weeks.
Here is the problem, a hernia is a genetic weakness in that tissue, and if they just sew it up everything is just as weak as before (if not weaker). With the mesh it reinforces the entire area.
There is a downside to the mesh, there are staples that hold it in place, these can cause some pain. Training abs a lot has help reduce the staple pain I would occasionaly get. I'm 12 years post op, the mesh was VERY new when I had it done.
Ive been having this recent groin pain from doing sprints first thing in the cold morning. But after reading what inguinal hernia is i am now PARANOID! My gf thinks am hypochondriac...i agree as well.
Does the inguinal hernia hurt 24/7? and did you guys feel a groin pain also?
