Hyperimmune egg protein is raising eyebrows in the research community, and excitement among bodybuilders.
By Timothy Scheet, PhD
Supercharged hyperimmune egg protein may revolutionize the bodybuilding protein category.
At one time, most protein supplements were made from eggs, which are a good source of albumin, a high-quality complete protein also found in our blood. Protein supplement makers eventually realized that they could process milk to get whey protein, and moved away from using eggs. However, with new science, the next advancement is here. Are you ready for a ramped-up, supercharged, egg-based protein?
Supercharged hyperimmune egg is a supplement containing pure egg protein derived from chicken hens that were immunized with more than 26 dead pathogens of human origin. Here’s how it works: Immunizing the hens causes their immune systems to produce antibodies to the dead pathogens that they were exposed too. Once the antibodies are produced, the chicken hens transfer them to their eggs, which are then collected and processed to make supercharged hyperimmune egg protein.
After a person ingests this protein, immune-system-boosting-specific antibodies (also known as immunoglobulins) are absorbed by the body, where they interact and activate the autoimmune system. The body’s autoimmune system is responsible for protecting the body from foreign invading pathogens similar to how vaccines function to protect against disease. A more powerful autoimmune system enhances the biological repair of damaged muscle tissue from an intense workout.
You can see where this is going: bigger, stronger muscles.
Testing The Super Egg
Supercharged hyperimmune egg protein has been used for clinical patients for years, but was just recently tested in an athletic population. Research conducted over the past three years in my laboratory has shown a significant increase in muscular strength and endurance, as well as significant decreases in exercising heart rate and measures of muscle soreness in the group that supplemented with the supercharged hyperimmune egg protein.
We conducted a double-blind research study where the subjects were split into two groups. Each group followed the exact same protocol with the only difference being which product they were given each day.
After just seven days, subjects in the supercharged hyperimmune egg protein group increased their 1-rep maximum (1RM) by 5 lb. The subjects were able to perform two more repetitions on the bench press than the subjects in the placebo group. The same subjects also had less muscle soreness 24 hours following exercise testing despite being able to lift more weight.
The subjects also had a 9% increase in anaerobic power and a 6% decrease in heart rate during a running test, which indicates that the supercharged hyperimmune egg protein made it easier for the subjects to perform the running test.
Another major finding showed that the same results were measured 48 hours after the previous exercise testing session, which indicated that the supercharged hyperimmune egg protein helped subjects recover more quickly so they could perform more work.
Eggstra Muscle
Next, we analyzed blood samples to see if the supercharged hyperimmune egg protein activated the anabolic hormones that regulate muscle growth.
The group that supplemented with the supercharged hyperimmune egg protein had a significant increase in human growth hormone (hGH) after just seven days. However, hGH was significantly decreased by nine days, which means that the exercise testing protocol caused enough muscle damage that the elevated hGH was now binding to receptors in the liver, which resulted in an increase in insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I). We also measured the IGF binding proteins that regulate the anabolic action of IGF-I. The IGF binding proteins responded as expected to support the anabolic growth and repair of muscle tissue. Neither total testosterone nor the free androgen index (a measure of bioactive testosterone) were different between the two groups, indicating that the supercharged hyperimmune egg protein supplement was stimulating the hGH system and not the testosterone system.
Collectively, the data from this study provided the evidence to support that the supercharged hyperimmune egg protein supplement caused greater repair and recovery of muscle tissue by stimulating the hGH insulin-like growth factor pathway. The improved recovery led to significant increases in muscular strength, muscular endurance and anaerobic power, as well as decreased muscle soreness and heart rate during exercise.
Bird’s The Word
Keep your eye out for this new product. When it comes to protein supplements, supercharged hyperimmune egg protein is really in a class all by itself. It has tremendous potential for athletes. (One warning: People who have egg allergies need to be cautioned that supercharged hyperimmune egg protein is made from real chicken eggs and therefore should be avoided.)
