I started on the bactrim to kill the infection on my neck and it didn't work. In fact, I started to get more popping up here and there on my body. So I went back in and they took a culture and turns out it is MRSA. They put me on a different kind of antibiotic called Cleocin and it is starting to clear up.

Its a good thing I went to get checked out, cause I know this stuff can get pretty nasty.

For those of you who don't already, heres a few gym rules to live by these days....
1) Disinfect your equipment BEFORE and AFTER you use it.
2) Wash or sanitize your hands throughout the workout.
3) Never touch your face!
4) Never use a towel supplied by the gym.
5) Never wipe down the bench with the same towel you wipe your face with.
6) and of course, shower immediately following your workout.

Trust me, you guys don't want these big ass painful puss-leaking boils popping up on your body!

Ouch, I always worry about that at gyms that don't pass out towels (which means more swear and junk on the equipment)

Good thing you caught it before it got to bad.

ADD RIFAMPIN NOW. Talk to your MD today...

My doc said theres no need for rifampin. He said its a lengthy treatment with lots of risks used for when mrsa goes septic or something like that. I can't remember his exact words.

Good advice. My wife always jumps my case because I use the gym supplied towels. She learned in nursing school that those towels ARE NOT clean and harbor TONS of bacteria even after laundering. I am paranoid about training if I have a cut on my hands these days.

That is not protocol...Rifampin is for 1 week and I am not sure what these great risks are? It is great adjuvant therapy...JMHO

Oh Shit! You think you got it from the gym equipment? Thanks for the info

Shit im sorry bro. Isnt mrsa incurable and you need to stay on antibiotics for life? Maybe thats just what I heard. Im curious as to how this is treated and if it goes away. My prayers go to your.

We all have a certain amount of MRSA on our bodies as we speak... Some of us, however, have a reaction. You do not have to stay on anti-biotics for life. Some people believe MRSA goes away, and some believe it remains dormant in the body. Either way if a patient tests positive in a hospital, he/she will be put in a contact isolation room with every visit, regardless if they test positive or negative after that.

We all dont have MRSA on our bodies, we all have Staphylococcus bacteria on our bodies. Some of us have staphylococcus aureus on our bodies (which can cause infections). And then there are those of us (much fewer) who have gotten Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus on us. It used to be only and rarely found in hospitals but now its everywhere. It killed a few people a couple years ago when it was starting to spread big time cause no one knew what is was. Most people just think they got a spider bite or acne. If it goes untreated the bacteria can spread and cause abcessess on organs and eventually kill you.

Thanks for the thoughts bro. Things are lookin good though. The boils are shrinking down and some are already gone. I'll be back in the gym soon enough!:D

Sorry about the misinterpretation, I meant to go a little more in depth but I am at work, and I just happened to try to type this before a meeting... But your correction is absolutely spot on. I can tell you MRSA is spread through hospitals quite often through blood pressure cuffs, including a very well known hospital here in NC.
The problem was that electronic blood pressure cuffs were used to check vital signs in the hospital. Nursing Assistant's would then check the vitals for every patient using the same blood pressure cuff. Before I left, another nurse and I were working on a rule to be passed for a blood pressure cuff to be put in every room and thrown away after leaving. Maybe the rule has passed, but I left before it was ever put into effect. I have seen quite a few people in this hospital become VERY sick. Thank God I never caught it!
