Hack squats with Tom Platz. Knees of steel. Don't know how his
knees are now (I think okay) but by all rights, he should have
had two total knee replacements by now.

I have met Tom and saw him train (and a semi-private posing
exhibition) before his best Olympia and it was insane. Too bad
I never saw him train legs. Was not in LA long enough, but had
I known about the leg workouts (for some reason I didn't), I
would like to think I would have made the time see them.

This posing exhibition I mentioned . . . I was talking with him
after the event (and taking a foto of him and my cute cousin).
He had on sweat pants and you could literally see the deep
cuts and muscular separation through the fabric. Incredible.
And a super nice guy too.

He starts out that seminar and all most all of his seminars with the basics of why his knees were so healthy. I could paraphrase but essentially the answer is attention to detail and understanding anatomy. Platz was so far ahead of the bull shit weider methods that plagued bodybuilding.

I did not listen to the sound on that video :(

From what little I know, what he has written (never watched his seminars on YouTube(?)),
Tom stretched extensively before training legs. He also had, by his own admission, very
very good ankle flexibility (genetic) which he says contributed greatly to his squatting ability.

That's my 0.02 cents worth . . .

This is my favorite Platz video!

I think that is Fred Hatfield and Katz behind him.

M,

I recently saw video of a seminar by Kaz where he is saying that Tom used some fake
plates when he did this, apparently he was saying so while Tom was squatting too.

Not spreading rumors as all this is on tape. Don't have the time or the inclination to
find it but it is out there somewhere . . .

Possible, but I don't think that rumor is true. Tom Platz doesn't seem like the kind of guy to do that, and he didn't really have a reason to do that. The amount of weight isn't that incredible either. I used to be able to do that much for about 8 reps in a straight set without resting. So he did about 3 times that but his legs were huge. I could have probably done about 10 or 11 if I rested a bit like he did. I think it was real.

Considering Platz trained very high volume, anyway, and did seemingly endless reps sometimes, I really have no problem believing that it was real.

1 arm barbell rows, prone rows(sometimes called seal rows) Pendlay rows(not really weird but not too many people do them anymore), 1 arm grenade curls(it’s a spherical cable attachment from elitefts that really hammers your forearms. Banded close grip smith machine presses

I grab the low handle in the cable crossover stacks on each side with crossover. Meaning the left stack is in the right hand and the right stack is in the left hand and they are across the front of my body. Then I step back so I don't pull against my skin and I do a mid back/trap type shrug.
Sounds weird but when you get the right angle it actually has a nice stretch and contraction to it. I use it as the final exercise on shoulder workouts.
Weird. I know

I've never seen Paul lie on the bench like you normally would for this exercise. Is there something about going sideways that makes the exercise more effective?
lying long ways on the bench a heavy dumbbell might be very uncomfortable on your shoulder and/or pull you backwards on the bench. The way he does it you can keep your ass down and the heavy dumbbell won't pull you out of position.

having short femurs didn't hurt him either i'm sure. ever see the national Chinese Olympic Weightlifting team? they all have short stubby legs and incredible quads. all squat hamstring to calves and can keep a nearly perfectly upright torso while doing it (even with maximum poundages). Platz's build certainly lent itself to getting massive gains for his quads when doing any squatting movement. That's not to say he didn't work his ass off and take good care of his body.

Seated cable curl variation

- Go to a FreeMotion Shoulder Press

- Attach handles with no slack to the cable attachments

- Select resistance

- Sit at the edge of the seat and lean your torso forward

- Grab the handles and curl while keeping your elbows back and slightly up

- At the top of the movement your fists should be next to you pecs like in a drag curl

- Lower and repeat

I’ve been doing these for years. I do these on a incline bench set on first setting sometimes on the second setting as well. These have made a great difference on my shoulders. People always say “those will wreck my shoulders” I just reply “Don’t do em!

This tricep exercise feels like a close grip bench! A good one!
