Any insurance gurus or agents here? My mother is not well and in her 70's. Went to see her and had some hard talks. Come to find out she has no life insurance. She is disabled with severe rheumatoid arthritis and lives off social security. Is there any decent places where I can take a policy out,. A small one to help cover funeral etc that won't cost me hundreds month?

Not an insurance agent but know enough about it that she would likely have a hard time being underwritten due to her arthritis as well as her age. Your best bet is something like advertised on TV like "Colonial Penn" where there are no medical questions. In terms of bang for the buck it does not come close to a regular policy but you should be able to cover her funeral expenses and a little more for a modest sum of money.

Thanks. Yeah that's what I was leaning towards also but wanted to see if anyone else had any other ideas.

You might be better off now just starting a savings plan for her. Create an account somewhere and start saving up money. You could invest in short term CDs or something else fairly liquid. Mutual funds would be a good choice. You might actually do better that way rather than paying insurance.

70s isn't old these days. She could have a good 10 to 20 years of life left. Is her health really that bad? Both of my parents are in their early 80s and seem like they could easily go on for another 10 years. You have plenty of time to save up, if all you're trying to do is save up for funeral costs.

DONT GO WITH COLONIAL PENN, TAKES 2 YEARS TO GO IN BENEFIT. GET WITH A INDEPENDENT AGENT WHO HAS MANY COMPANIES, GET A FULL BENEFIT--USUALLY UP TO 35-50K WITH OUT A MEDICAL AND NO WAITING PERIOD AS LONG AS COMPLETLY TRUTHFUL
IM ME AND I WILL GIVE YOU NAMES OF SEVERAL COMPANIES--

^^THIS

Insurance is a "bad investment." They make money because most people pay more into it than they get out of it. A google search indicated that funerals can cost between $7,000 and $12,000. With the 11 year bull market we've enjoyed, I think a correction is very possible, so you could use CDs, but the interest rate is so poor, a simple savings or checking account is fine.

You stated that you didn't want to spend hundreds per month, so how about $150 per month. That'll put $1,800 per year. In four years you'll have enough money for a modest funeral.

Funeral don't have to cost that much. They can be like a wedding. You can spend 10's of thousands. Or mine was a few hundred. My mother passed away last year and to be cremated cost $2400. And there are cheaper options then mine. And if you pay in advance you can get an even better deal.

My mother told me she just found a place that will cremate for only $800.

Cremate me. Bury me in a coffee can with my dogs ashes. Push me out to sea on a cheap surf board. I want my son to to keep the money. My soul already gone.

What a bargain! I will have to look for a place like that around here.

That's what I want done when I go. Burn me up as cheaply as possible, and scatter my ashes over the graves of porn stars August Ames, Shyla Stylez, and Savannah.

Better that than some maudlin funeral where all the greedy relatives gather around and pretend to be sad. Other than my beloved children, I never wanted to hang around any of those white trash losers anyway.

Burn me up for cheap, and give the money to my children, so they can enjoy a few last good memories of me as I head into whatever comes next.

Check to see if they pick up the body, is casket included, the choice of urn can cost more #of death certificates etc. Every state has different laws too. My mother donated her body to the university for study and they would take care of cremation when done. But they didn't need her remains. So donating can be an option and inexpensive.

Both of my parents were cremated. It's much easier on the family. Plan a family gathering at some point to talk about old times.
