I am sitting here in the Naples, Fla area, first striking point of Hurricane
Wilma this past early Monday morning.

While this hurricane was not as catastropic to us as Katrina was to
Louisiana/Mississipi, the "number" done on the electrical grid was the
most devastating in U.S. Natural disaster history. No earthquake, no
flood, no previous hurricane had destroyed the electric like Wilma.
Almost 90% of us in South Florida are without power.

In the Collier County(Naples) area, it was announced yesterday that
there would be 8 designated Fema locations open until 7pm last
night distributing water and Ice. While in my home we were well prepared
with water, ice is not exactly something you can stock up on. Once
you lose electric, you have to keep replenishing what you have thrown
in your refrigerator regularly.

Anyway of 8 Fema locations announced for pickup of ice/water, only
2 of them someone from Fema/National Guard actually showed up!
And at one of the two, they were 4 hours late while 1,000 people
waited on line for them to come only to find there was water but
no ice! Not knowing this had happened, I showed up at this location
at 6pm, only to find 100 national guardsmen standing around with
their hands in their pockets, no water and no ice, no nothing! I then
spent 3 more hours hunting for ice and finally found it at the only
operating Publix Grocery store with full power including waiting on
line there 1.5 hours with 70 or so desperate people.

Once again Fema and the U.S. has failed its own people. When are
Americans going to understand we need leadership here that puts
our own people first, rather than people half way around the world!

From Hurricane Hell, Naples, Fla. area

P.S. Try and eat 7 bodybuilder meals a day in this scenario!

hey man i am really sorry to hear what you and thousands of other people are going through. there really is no excuse as to why you guys arent being better taken care of.

everyone knew it was coming. IMO tuesday right after wilma passed there should of been aid there taking care of you peeps. its a given that there will be lines, etc., but what you are describing is just rediculous. its unfortunate mine along with millions of others tax dollars arent buying you guys's food and water right now.

im not the smartest person when it comes to politics and im ashamed of that, but i can admit it, however it seems as though our countries priorities are elsewhere right now. our people come first, then our people, then our people, then who ever the fuck else needs a hand.

good luck man,

Take it from me first hand...from Katrina land...If you are waiting on the government to help you out, you have a long wait...if you need something done find a way to do it yourself...if I can help just PM. Peace,GF

Worldspan, I'm sorry to hear you're having a tough time. I hate to see anyone have problems. Lord knows I've dealt with my share.

I have to say though, I don't and will never understand why people think the government owes them anything. The government doesn't have to give you food. The government doesn't have to give you money. The government isn't responsible for you, me, or our families.

I pay taxes, as I'm sure you do. You may say that paying taxes gives Americans the right to aid in hard times. Well, I disagree. Taxes give us the world's most powerful military, roads, educational grants, etc, etc. It doesn't give us the right to handouts when disasters strike. Especially when people CHOOSE to live in places that are WELL KNOWN for frequent natural disasters. Not to sound harsh, but why do people live in places that they KNOW will be torn to shreds once every few years? I mean, I could not in good consiounse have myself and my family living in a place that I knew could be destroyed once or twice a year. And I damn sure couldn't expect the government to save me once it DID happen.

The problem with America isn't the government. The problem with America is that we have grown to EXPECT the government to take care of us. Americans are weak, spoiled and lazy. THAT, my friends, is the problem. People need to relearn how to take care of themselves and get a little common sense. If you think your home could be struck by a hurricane....why not move somewhere where there are no hurricanes instead of acting like the government owes you something when it happens?

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this and that's ok. It's about that time again anyway.

Worldspan-

I to live in Naples (Collier County)

FEMA is a joke IMO, Supply trucks last night were turned away from the area due to the "curfew"; i find this appaling. I can understand enforceing curfew rules for people aimlessly driving around, however if they are trying to find food, or deliver supplies, denying this is ludicris. Agreed this administration needs to change.

Good Luck,

Digz

Hey Bbj, Some parts of me agree with you and some disagree...since I live in a part of the country you consider to have frequent natural disasters maybe you can enlighten me as to where there are no such things...I have not found one yet...oh and by the way it's been 31 years since the last natural disaster here...is that frequent? You figured a flame, I figure just some intelligent conversation. Peace,GF

Bro, forgive me, but you need a reality check. I have never expected
the government to take care of me nor have I have ever expected a
handout. I make an almost 6 figure income but even if I were a millionaire,
that would not get me ice bro!

I have paid taxes all my life and expecting delivery of ice is a very modest
request in exchange. "common sense" and "relearning how to take care
of oneself" does not turn water into ice.

The Ft Myers Airport is open, Fort Lauderdale is still closed, Miami
partial operations. Get on an airplane and come on down, live anywhere
here there is no ice, no electric, no water so you can't flush the toilets,
experience this and then see how you feel!

Bush and his buddies at Fema in Washington said after Katrina they
had learned from their mistakes and they would never be repeated
again. Well they have and its pure hell! Come wait on a line with 1000
desperate people and then see what you think!

Most of the American people live in places where disaster can strike
be it an earthquake out West, a tornadoe in the Midwest, or a hurricane in the south, the number of which is a very new phenomenon last year or so.

The only reason I can type this email is because my business is on
the same electrical grid as a firehouse so at least in my office I have
some assemblance of normalcy.

Regretfully the only way you will understand what I am saying here
is in some way to experience the same and then your tune will surely
change I can assure you!

Well, you obviously don't know me. I've been through just about any disaster you can think of. (sawed my hand off-had it reattached, cracked my skull, major medical problems, lost my home and had nowhere to go THREE DIFFERENT TIMES) Talk about knowing about bad luck...and these are just a few examples. Yet not once did I EVER think the government should've given me anything...not even ice. I admit that when you don't have a place to live and you see someone cashing a welfare check and buying ribeyes with food stamps, it makes it tempting to think the government should do something for you. But, I know that only I am responsible for ME. No one else. What would we do if our government was like so many others in the world and gave us NO HELP whatsoever? Would we all just die? Or, would we perhaps learn to take care of shit on our own? Maybe we could even survive without ice.

As for there being a place on Earth where disasters NEVER strike, well of course no such place exists. But there are a WHOLE SHITLOAD of places to go that aren't totally wiped out every few years. I live in one.

well IMO if the government is going to bail every other fuckin country under the suns' assese out of disasters with my tax money, when shit goes down on our homeland they better fuckin help out our brothers and sisters who are in need. i feel as an american or any decent human being its just the right thing to do when something like this occurs. this is one reason we pay taxes for instances like this.

good luck,

btw, cracking your skull and cutting off your hand is not a federal disaster, its one person who did something stupid, or in your case had bad luck. not by chance did your insurance company help pay for your medical procedures did they? it really wasnt their fault you cut your hand off or cracked your skull so why should they be paying for your bad luck?

Bigboy:

Florida does not get wiped out every few years. This particular part
of Florida, Collier County, has not had a major hurricane since 1960

New Jersey/Connecticut even New Hampshire just had major flooding.
We know about the tornadoes in the Midwest, the Flooding on the
Mississippi few years back. and the earthquakes out west. Where
do you live, Alaska ?

I admire you for being an independent kind of guy. But when your
government offers to help and then they foul it up bigtime, after
saying they had their act in order following Katrina, well what can I say!

I travel a lot internationally and I was advised years ago if you ever
get in trouble abroad, call the British Embassy, not the U.S. embassy,
the Brits will help you more than your own country. I guess the
same might apply to domestic disasters too!

I always thought that in a Democracy, we pooled our resources. We can as a people better support each other through a central government of by and for the people, particularly during a disaster in which so many are affected. When the government takes our resources and squanders them frivolously, leaving us ill-prepared, unprotected, and at a cost of innocent lives, it is time to make some changes. The government may not "owe" us anything, but the resources are ours, not theirs.
