OK I have severe shoulder pain pretty much all the time. I had a script for Ultram (tramadol) from my doc. Now this is not a narcotic at all. But I thought dammit I dont want to keep taking x-tra stuff along with the other Medications for muscle growth. Now the problem is Ive been off for two days and im getting the goose bumps on and off. Cant sleep for shit. Feel super tired. I just dont know what to do. Ive never had this happen before. A freind said im going through withdrawl. I said how can that be its not a narcotic. Anyways any ideas on what to do about this. Im kinda pissed the doc said it wasnt addictive etc... either. Thanks.

I think you need to get in touch w/ the Doc who prescribed this and find out what to do.

Tramadol is the generic name for Ultram and he is some info that I found.

What are the possible side effects of tramadol?
If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking tramadol and seek emergency medical attention or contact your doctor immediately:

an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives); or
seizures.
Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take tramadol and talk to your doctor if you experience

dizziness, drowsiness, or headache;
nervousness, tremor, or anxiety;
nausea, vomiting, constipation, or diarrhea; or
itching, dry mouth, or sweating.

Tramadol is a unique drug. It's analgesic effects result from several different actions. One thing it does is that it has selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor properties, sorta like effexor or paxil. Another thing it does it that it binds to the mu opiod receptor, which is the same primary receptor that morphine binds. So, it does have some narcotic properties even though it may not be techinically classified as a narcotic. But you don't have to jump through the same loopholes to perscribe it as you would morphine.

It does sound like you're having a withdrawl reaction with the goosebumps (that's where the expression "quitting cold turkey" came from) and the insomnia.

Any drug like agonizes opioid receptors can be addictive. But, it's not as potent as the morphines, so the abuse/addiction potential is much lower. You may feel like crap for a couple of days, but it's nothing life-threatining. However, I would get in touch with you doc and talk to him about this... Good luck.

Thanks alot everyone for listening. I looked it up and found that it appears im going through withdrawl. However I hope this doesnt last super long. Also the bitch of it was that it really helped my shoulder pain and didnt make me feel all goofy or stoned if you know what I mean. Its such a hard decision weather to go back on it. If i dont take it I cant train upper body for shit. I guess im still in a dilemma. THanks all for your help. I freaking love this board.

Maybe you should try fixing the cause of the pain- what's wrong w/ your shoulder? A pain reliver, addictive or not, isn't really a long-term solution. You need to get to the root of the problem or your training days might be over soon.

yup, withdrawal is what you are feeling. However, the doc would probably say you are habituated rather than addicted. If you go back on, you should taper off next time. - CH
