Milk make your skin thick?

I was once training at Ian Dowes gym in London, some of you guys might of heard of him before. Anyway when I finished training, I went to order my protein shake and the girl that was serving me (she looked like a pro as well but not in that sense) made the shake with water, I asked her why she didnt put milk in it she said that its no good and it thickens the skin. ????????

Anyway since then Ive made my proteins with water but the other day I had it with milk and boy did it taste good.

Any thoughts about that, anyone heard anything similar?

I have heard the same. I dont drink milk, it is one of the worst foods stuff you can put into your body IMO. Full of sugar.

The only good milk for humans comes from our mothers and we need it for 6-12 months only. 80% of people has some kind of lactose intolerance. Get your calcium from green veggies and maybe some pills and you'll feel the difference. Less bloat and mucus...

Even totaly fat free milk is full of sugar? I take magneisuım and calcium tablets but I thought casein protein (which comes from milk products) is good for you especialy before you go to bed.

Nothing wrong with drinking milk when bulking...I drop it when cutting.

Porter Cotrell once told me this... i kept on drinking it tho :D

until recently (i guess about a year ago) when i stipped drinking it because of all the sugar.

Milk contains fat, lactose, and protein. Lactose is a disaccharide (galactose & glucose) like sucrose (table sugar), however unlike sucrose which has a GI of 61, milk only has a GI of 32.

1 cup of milk typically contains:
81 calories
0.5g fat - 5 calories (6%)
11g carbs (lactose) - 44 calories (54%)
8g protein - 32 calories (40%)

That's 40% of your calories from a complete protein, and 54 from a low glycemic carb, and only 6 from fat.

I have also heard that milk will make your skin thick, but have never seen any proof. Until I do, I consider it a old wives tale. Also milk does not cause an increase in mucous production.

I love milk. Its taste good, doesn't bloat me or any of the other obsurd comments I hear about it. Plus it has 1 gram of protein for every fluid ounce. As long as you gotta clean diet to begin with and are drinking low fat milk I think it should be used. I have never heard of it making your skin thick but if it did I can assure that I would never get a cut deep of enough to make me bleed so this is untrue.

I also heard that it slows the whey proteins absortion down so when you need whey protein fast, ie after a workout, you should stay away from milk because when you add milk it dont absorb into your system as fast and then what would be the point of taking whey?

I agree, I never take milk pwo. Just dextrose/malto/wazy maise and whey isolate for me.

Yeah that is absolutely true! You definitely do not want milk with your pwo shake because it slows everything down which is counterproductive to what you are trying to do, and that is get as many nutrients into your system in the shortest amount of time... I usually use some sort of juice, mainly grape juice with my pwo shakes... Other than post workout I say there is absolutely nothing wrong with using milk while bulking... However, I would go no higher than 2% though...

say no to milk

I dont drink any milk now, I may have a little organic whole milk with some oatmeal sometimes but not much at all...

I have read that 3/4 of the population is lactose intolerant in onw way or another. I get a extremly back mucos reaction when I consume dairy products. I have tried goat and raw cows milk and didnt get the same problems from them, this leads me to belive it is the pasterization process and the killin of all the bac. (good and bad) is causing these problems to me.

heres a good read on milk

Koevoet: I have soem info about milk causing a mucos buildup, I will search for it and post it to see what you think...

Skin does not thicken

The difference between thin and thick skin is due to the subcutaneous layer of fat BENEATH the skin. This is a matter of conditioning. The lower your bodyfat the thinner your skin will appear.

Pinnock CB et al. (1990) Relationship between milk intake and mucus production in adult volunteers challenged with rhinovirus-2. Am Rev

Lactose intolerance levels are highly dependent on heritage. With almost all Native Americans being intolerant, and almost no Swedes having issues.

That McDougall newsletter is so biased it is basically useless. Dr. John McDougall is a vegan who think that anything from animals is bad. He twists science to suit his personal views and then sells it as fact.

IF YOU ARE NOT LACTOSE INTOLERANT

YOU ARE DOING YOURSELVES AN INJUSTICE IF YOU AVOID MILK. IT IS THE NUMBER ONE FOOD ON THIS EARTH. GO WITH SKIM TO AVOID SATURATED FATS. FOR GODS SAKES AT LEAST GET LACTAID IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM.

I'm not trying to be the dissenting voice, but show me some scientific proof that milk makes your skin thick. There is none, ok some people may be lactose intorelant but that doesn't mean it will increase your skin thickness. It may do other things. This is one of those bodybuilding myths that needs to stop.

Thank you!! Someone with good ole plain common logic and sense. "Thick Skin"..That one always makes me laugh. Oz for Oz, one of the best protein sources known to man. Super Cheap. Image for a little over 2 bucks..a gallon of skim milk provide's 128 grams of protein..WOW!! Now simply sip that throught out the day between meal. Anabolic IV!! Drink milk if you're caught away from home and hungry. Wanna up your protein shake, mix it with milk.

The way it was explain to me, by Vince Gironda's truest disciple, the sugar in milk is a different type of sugar because of the animal source. Raw milk is the best of the best though. If it worked for all of the old school greats, and they were ripped by any standards; even after drinking many times, gallons a week..no excuse. You want size power and raw mass..drink up!! Cutting? That is individual. Some people do not react well while cutting by using milk.

Don't get me started on whole eggs...another excellent choice. Eggs whites are for cutting only in my book. Even then, you still need some fats to digest the protein...so what do you do add some yolks right?

No more excuses now, go buy some milk!!

phil, not argueing with you.... but,

why is it that you hear from about 95% of real bodybuilders to avoid milk when dieting?

Milk is great for bulking and I have all my clients drink a boatload of it offseason. As for dieting, not just milk but any dairy should be cut out while dieting. Thick skin is a misnormer and wives tale, but you should avoid dairy because of digetive issues with sugar and it will add some thin layers of fat under the skin which is what led people to orginally state you had thick skin.
