Nitrogen balance

I was reading another thread and saw this and well i have no idea what the answer is. we know about supplements that help keep a positive nitrogen balance but what whole foods do it? Its something id love to know and id love an explination as to how it's done by foods that do it.

this is one of those that will have multiple scenarious that will greatly affect the outcome. the first would be what are the total calories in reference to maintenance? the body should maintain this positive balance even with what a typical bodybuilder would consider very low protein if there are enough calories or even excess calories. now when there is a calorie deficit the chance for the positive balance will go down and then the macronutrient profile becomes crucial, carbs and fats are protein sparing so if they are consumed at a high enough rate then this will help with maintaining this balance. anabolic steriods will greatly help this. how hard is the training, is it so intense that there is now a catabolic environment and not an ample amount of nutrients to repair the broken down tissue? and on and on the scenarios go.....

as i re-read the post i don't think specific foods are going to be the issue as opposed to again total calories and then macro profiles

thanks for the replies guys. id like to see more discussion on this. nutrition is the, IMO, most important factor in bodybuilding. it NEEDS more discussion.

I cant wait to see the outcome on this thread. Tkav is definately right. less drug talk. more nutrition talk. I cant help but notice that my size gains are very slow even though I'm eating an obnoxious amount of protein and moderate carbs fat per phil's diet. But since I'm eating so healthy all the time, I know my calories are very low and cant help but wonder if having cheat meals would actually accelerate my gains due to having more calories. this will be interesting.

as long as your taking in enough protein which you are cause ur on Phil's diet plan then ur in a positive nitrogen balance.

as i've thought about this thread a bit i wonder about stress. how often do you have someone who goes through a divorce for example and they lose tons of weight due to the stress. they often lose tons of muscle(negative nitrogen balance), is this because they cut their cals so badly or is the stress catabolic....?

well stress raises your cortisol which is catabolic but this would only have a major effect if ur calories were low.

you meant catabolic not anticatabolic

I said the same thing about discussing training routines, and it flopped. No one really posted anything about routines. It turned into a discussion about why people DON'T talk about routines. Counterproductive, wouldn't you think? I thought so. I gave up on it. I go to bodybuilding.com (shudder) for training discussions, if I absolutely have to. I don't think you'll get much of a reply on this, but maybe I'm wrong? I will say that nutrition should be discussed more than it has. I haven't been here long, but that's my 2 cents.

this is probably because most guys just post what they've read somewhere else already. like the post asking when to do cardio, i've seen that question so many times i want to vomit. this nitrogen balance post is much different. a bit more scientific and not so easy to measure.

This is going to sound a little newbish but, I always hear the term "positive nitrogen balance" thrown around but I never hear a deffinition of what that actually means. anyone have a good deffinition or explaination of what this actually refers too?

Question for everyone...what different ways do people use to keep them in a positive nitrogen state?
I might be wrong, but Layne Norton uses BCAAs between meals to spike his...similar to what Phils trainees do.

when amino acids leave the muscle cells they are going into a catabolic state, when you are in a positive nitrogen balance, the aminos are not leaving, but staying. extreme caloric deficiency will cause the body to break down muscle tissue for energy, this is the opposite of positive nitrogen balance.

just that simple eh? we can all just go home now then! never lose muscle while dieting, just eat lots of protein and your good to go. if i was phil i don't know if i would be so excited about all my clients "speaking what they believe to be true", i would be too concerned people would think its my words too...

Why are you being a prick today for?

because i couldnt get but two responses to a thread i started and i was pissed off that obama is somehow going to take credit for the skills of the navy seals that took out those damn pirates. he sat back quiet for the first few days, now he talks like he ordered it. just like voting "present" while he was in the senate instead of "yes" or "no". if that capt. had died then he wasn't responsible, but since it turned out well, he comes forward. bullshit.
