I know there is a forum for animals but id rather post here because there is more traffic for the time being.

This girl i have been seeing just got an eight week old doberman pinscher that had two feet of its intestines dead. How intestines die I have no idea, but the puppy had an operation two days ago and he looks like a holocaust victom. He has no fat and very little muscle he is weak and will not eat hes only drinking water. The vet put him on two antiboitics and a deworm medication. The dog is very weak and has a hard time getting up but will walk around a little bit, but wont eat and we have tryed feeding him everything from dog food to steak, hamburger anything just so he would eat.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get him to eat, hes a cute little pup and i dont want to see him get any more frail and die. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

If you could get the vet to put a cathrter an let you run lactated ringers until he starts eating, atleast he would have electrolyts.B12 would also help with appatite and tasty paste for calories.

hope it helps

Any time a dog won't eat, that's when you know there's something serious going on.. The vet has no further explanation for it?

the vet says that the surgery he did was pretty in depth and he took out the two foot of dead intestine, therfore he believes it may have hurt the puppys appetite. The problem is hes so skinny and frail you can see all his bones and structure im not sure how long he will make it not eating.

I would just continue trying to feed him the meat like steak, hamburg, chicken, stuff like that.. Cuz if he's gonna eat something eventually, it'd definitely be that over dog food.. Just leave some meat in his bowl, and I'd say that's your best bet.. And if he's only drinking water you said, maybe put a bowl of milk out for him - that'll at least be some nutrients for the poor guy.

People can be tube fed so I'd think a pooch would be able to as well(not sure exactly though) My uncle is a vet and is out of town but I can email him for further thoughts...however, your vet should be able to consult you as well.
BTW, if he's not giving you the answer you're looking for, hit up a different vet facility. Try some of the aboved mentioned foods over and over...espeacially the anything meaty that's very soft/easy to chew and/or digest....Maybe even try some bone marrow cuts from a meat dept. to entice the pup to eat/lick some nutrients. Good luck to your pup bro:)

Join a doberman fourm and ask questions, contact breeders and I am not being sarcatic BTW. He sounds sick.
I lost my 3 year old GDS 1 week ago to serious the illness. B12 will or should make your dog eat. Cant understand why your vet would not give him B12 and you diet advice. I would bring him somewere else. You would think if part of the intentine was dead it should be removed to avoid digestion problems and the dog starving. See another vet and keep a close eye on him. Show him loads of love and affection, a reason to live. They are nice dogs, best of luck. Hope all works out.

How do you know his intestines are dead and two feet of the intestine did they cut him open. It it possible to tell from xray.

They removed the two feet of intestine two days ago, hes a really sweet lovable little dog i feel bad watching him in the health he has now. Too be honest about the vet im gonna check into another one monday when they open, the vet that did the surgery doesnt seem to care much about his health only the money he got for the surgery.

The dog should have never been sent home in a state like that, especially with your vet giving you no idea on how to feed him. I'm honestly shocked and disgusted by this.

The pup should have a catheter and be on fluids for at least a few days post surgery. He should be force fed a high calorie food such as Hill's A/D by syringe as well.

Your vet should have also told you why the pup ended up needing the intestines removed. Was there a foreign body or was this a congenital disorder? It is extremely uncommon for something like this to happen, even moreso in a young pup.

If you have any more questions you can PM me, I work in the animal medical field...

PM you address and I will send you one of my product in capsule form, you will have to open the capsule, if you PM your tel # I will give you instructin, I would not charge you for the product, some vets are using this version of my product on dogs post surgery for faster recovery and to increase the apetite.

Please hit up emeric delczeg right away. Other than that, sounds like you're getting a second opinion from another Doc., which is very good.

sorry

Yes, I thought usually with dead intestine comes blockages due to the muscle not moving it through. That would cause him not to eat. I know in a human if there was a blockage and they had to remove part of the intestine due to it being dead they would use a colostamy tube until they felt it was ready to due it on its own(this is in a human though)
Im sorry to rant but ya notice how some people just treat their animal like shit, let it out in the elements, no love, one stcrict meal a day, beatings, no vetinary care at all and those people have them live so long they get to the point where they say I just cant wait for it to die(horrible:()
Then us who take care of em by the book and put them second to none end up with horible choices to make with our pets.I can tell you that I had my last dog for almost 5 years and she got lymphoma(sorry about spellin) in all the glands when they found it. We were basically told by two very good vets that there was most likely no chance any therapy or procedure would take care of it. She was hit and miss with her health day to day. The day I took her to get her put down she looked and acted fine which made it so hard, but the night before and many before that she would start going into siezures and asthmatic attacks where I thought she was gone at certain points. I guess I had to get it done before she went in a painfull way.
Once again sorry about this rant but I would have cleaned out my bank account, maxed out credit cards and sold my car for the money to get her taken care of if I was told there was a slight chance for her. Others act like theres a burden on their life when they have a pet to care for.
So just give them the best life they can have for the short life that they get with us!!!! Its horrible to watch them suffer and I know how you feel so I hope your new pup's situation changes for the best. Good luck

Ok..2 years ago I had the same thing happen to my boxer, the vet removed about a foot of the small intestines. He was on antibiotics, IV's, the whole thing. He wouldnt eat at all for the first 3-4 days. He ended up pulling thru...Try feeding him stuff that is easy/soft to digest. I would give him his meds in a piece of ham. Trust me as long as he doesnt get a infection he has a very strong chance of pulling thru as long as you have agod vet.

I'd certainly get another vets oppinion , I had one of my hog dogs get cut realy bad once ( spilled his insides out) they had to remove a small section of colon that had gotten twisted and died , he diden't eat for a couple days but the vet kept him for two days post surgery for IV meds though so he was getting some nutrition that way , once he was home he just laid up for a couple days , I boiled up some chicken and liver and ran it through a food processor eventualy he would eat a few spoon fulls then he ate the whole bowl full and has been GTG ever since.

Not sure what "emeric delczeg" has for you but check it out and check with another vet , if a vet mentions the cost of a procedure or seems like he is just looking at another case take your animal else where !!
vets don't do their job to get rich they do it cause they love animals

I hope your pup pulls through and does well , animals are far more resiliant than humans and as long as he has a reason to live (loving family) their will power can bring them through amazing obsticals

He needs to be on iv fluids to at least get nutrients in his system. I've had my 10month old pup since he was 3 months old. He had parvo the 3rd day I got him. 4 vets told me he was going to die and there was nothing I could do but try to give him antibiotics. I went to a 5th(I'm the kind of person that will not accept failure or someone unwilling to give it their all) and they put him in isolation, fliuds anti nausea meds etc... Hes as healthy as can be. SO the point is, KEEP calling vets till you find the right one. You're dog needs you, so do your best brother!

You can do a few things here, first I really wish you guys would have gotten a second opinion before etting him remove that much from the pup.
If he's taking in water mix a small amount of prtein with it, but make sure its still real watery. I don't know much about emeric's pills but give them a shot. It's 2 days post surgery so he really wouldn't/shouldn't want to many solid foods. Plus I bet he's pretty drugged up so there really isn't an appetite. Don't give him any B12 or anything right now. His body is pretty resilent so let it do its work. The other thing you can do is give alittle pedialite, this will help keep him hydrated if he's only drinking alittle water.

I had a bad feeling about this, and i was right. The puppy didnt make it we brought him to an emergency vet today because its sunday and most are closed. The vet today( a differnt one) said he wanted to check on the dogs internals he thought maybe the stiches inside tore and all the waste was contaminating his organs. Th doc took out two staples and puss started coming out he drew out all the puss he could( the dog got a bad infection in only 3 days?) and gave the dog protein and nutrients. We went outside to let the puppy try and goto the bathroom and he started throwing up blood and fell down, we lost him right there no heartbeat or anything he died right outside the emergency vets. I feel bad the dog was a sweet little thing you could tell he didnt feel well the day after his surgery and he only wanted someone next to him all the time( which he did have). Nothing can be done now but i really appreciate all the feedback i got from everyone and emeric thankyou for offering your services aswell.

Oh man, I'm truly sorry bro:( I've never even seen your pup and I was hoping so much that he'd make it. Best wishes to him, you and yours buddy.

You tried your best

You were faced with a tough task and thank you for helping the dog. You done your best and sometimes that all we can do.

Respect.
