Question mostly for the self employed.

I have been working for a corporate finance company for quite some time. In doing so, my health insurance has always been the best and at a very reasonable rate.

I will be leaving my company soon to pursue a career change (going to med school).

I am a very healthy, young man who does not take any prescription meds nor do I need frequent doc visits.

I am looking for health insurance to cover catestrophic events. I dont mind a 2500, 5000 deductable. I just want a simple policy that only covers major medical expenses.

I pay for my blood labs out of pocket now since I dont want it on my companies plan.

So I just need insurance for that "God forbid something happens"....

Any ideas or advice?

If you are going to school and not working, you might qualify for free health care from the state.

Also......see what kind of health insurance the university offers for it's students.

This, when I was going to school I had great health insurance. Other than copay on visits/rx everything was paid for and only 500 per year.

Yea, I dunno how it is for med (graduate) school - but a regular college/university requires students to have insurance, and if they don't have their own, the school provides a reasonably priced plan.. This was 10 yrs ago when I enrolled in school tho, and it was a state univ. on top of that, so nowadays I really wouldn't be surprised if they just fucked you and told you to go find your own..

It was not clear if you were going to be employed again or self employed. While I provide "group" coverage for employees, As self employed I have taken advantage of the HSA plans. You can contribute like to an IRA but the kick is you don't have to use the funds for medical expenses. It functions much like an "extra" IRA. It requires a special "HSA" compatible plan which typically has larger deductibles. Mine is $1800 and then everything is covered 100% with no copays for prescriptions or visits. I believe mine is Blue Cross/ Blue Shield.

Yuck! I hate shopping for any kind of insurance. It's always confusing as hell.

Try these sites for info on health insurance.... healthinsurance.org

and you can compare rates at ehealthinsurance.com

When I went to med school our health insurance as covered by the University. I'm not aware of any accredited med school's that don't offer their students full coverage; however, it has been a while since I was a student. Check with your school. If you are not covered, then Humana offers reasonably affordable catastrophic coverage. Best of luck!

Thank you for the responses.

I should have clarified that I am not going to full-time med school right away. I will be finishing a few pre-reqs while still working until full time classes start.

I checked out ehealthinsurance. I am going to go with humana. They have reasonable rates and the policy type I am looking for.

Thank you again.

PS if anyone here is from FL and doesnt have insurance, check out goblueflorida.com

It IS NOT full insurance but it covers prescription meds, office visits (specialists and internal), fully covers bloodwork and has very low co pays. Just make sure you have something else for those (just in case) scenerios.
