OK, now, I am prepared to get slammed by some numbnuts for starting this thread, but just for the hell of it, I will anyway. For those who appreciate all music and appreciate opera, what are your favorite tenors/singers and their pieces? Two right off the bat for me are:

Andrea Bocelli - Con Te Partirò (Time To Say Goodbye)
Luciano Pavarotti - Nessun Dorma

Not an opera fan per se, but I can listen to Mozart's reqium mass for days on end. Always enjoyed classical- particularly the early Germans
Do you have suggestions along with the above Kaiser?

Caruso is my fav, though it's hard to find good recordings.

i haven't listened to opera in a long time. but here are a couple good ones that i remember

Pavarotti- Ridi Pagliaccio is a good one
Maria Callas- ave maria

if you're talking best opera IMO is Bizets Carmen.

the above are just Arias in Operatic Suites

I don't know what that exactly is, so you know more than me about it, as I am kind of new. I will look it up though.

an opera is the whole show...an aria is a song within the opera...

yup

I think Nessun Dorma is from turando or turandot or something. Havent got a clue who it was written by though.

Yes Turandot is the whole opera. As for Arias, that is why I said "piece", as I know it is not the whole opera as a show. I just was not familiar with the term.

one that you'll probably know and like is Figaros Aria from the Barber of Seville.

If you're just getting started with opera, I highly recomend the Russion operas such as Boris Gudinov. The Russian tradition of acapela singing really comes through.

I love the opera... however i did once fall asleep during one of the best operas in the country.. Quite embarassing.. For some reason listening to music in italian in person puts me out.. lol... However i have a Pandora station that plays nothing but and i really enjoy it... Giacomo Puccini is a very good composer..

i'm not a huge opera fan and really don't know much about it, but i do like boccelli. i also don't know if he is opera or fits into the genre, but josh groban has a hell of a voice too.

Saturday at 3:00pm while most "losers" are enjoying the college football games, eating wings, drinking beer etc, I will be watching the opera "Elixer of Love" by Gaentano Donizetti. So there.:D

One of the by products of a girlfriend from Rome is a participation in viewing opera and soccer. I have gone kicking and screaming, but have started to enjoy both.
