Old School PWO Nutrition

I'm interested in hearing what some of the big guys did back in the day for there post workout nutrition? I remember reading about Iabadman eating Del Taco during his workouts to get enough calories in to grow. Now and days everyone seems so worried about getting the proper ratio of protein/carbs/amino acids etc right after the workout to take advantage of the "anabolic window". Is it possible we are overthinking things a bit. I remember I made some of my best gains when I was in the Navy. Right after my buddy and I got done lifting we would pound down some BCAA tabs and either hit the chow hall or an all you can eat buffet. If we had extra cash Glutamine was taken then too, other than that, nothing complicated or special.

Do the gains were getting from trying to "optimize" everything really outweigh the cost and inconvenience of trying to find the perfect PWO shake?

Bump this thread ...Shit bro ... Great post ... Cant wait to read the replys ...

got to bump this up would love to hear form some of the old school boys on this

Well, I suppose it would depend on exactly what you're trying to accomplish. If pure size is the goal, then hell yeah, an all you can eat buffet can't be beat post workout. The more calories, the more size. Of course there's also the amount of fat you put on to be considered. Ten years ago, my post workout meals were something like a large pizza, or a chicken strip basket and a footlong coney from Sonic. Yeah, I grew, but I got fat too. I think the best thing to do, after all these years of trial and error, is to drink some whey with something like gatorade and then eat a good healthy meal about an hour later.

Goals

As BBJ said (man I am agreeing with you lately... wanna go on a date honey?) it depends on what your goals are.

Quality protein sources such as whey and a simple carb (maltodextrin) will yeild amazing results.

As for what the old timers did, do a search here. Lats has a great post from a while back on what the pros REALLY DID for eating. What was uncovered here was that during the off season they really didn't care what they ate, but for 12 weeks out of the year, they were very strict. Meaning, no junk foods and eating 5 or 6 meals a day spaced out evenly, sleeping good, laying off the booze, etc.

So it depends.. gaining weight? Just eat your ass off and keep the PWO shake high in carbs and good proteins. Dieting down? Decrease overall calories, increase protein and drop the fat down a bit.

I remember big dudes back in the day pounding down a couple foot long tuna subs from Subway after training for the norm and taking a 3rd home for later.
Before the PWO shakes were born.

I'm not a big believer in PWO shakes. I'd rather do something like a bcaa/glutamine drink while training and then when I'm hungry after training have a full course meal, though I've spent my fair share on pwo drinks, with no different result.

It was what was available at the time. Milk & egg protein ,weight gainers, metabolic optimizers ect. They were mixed with milk, banana's, raw eggs, peanut butter ect. I remember popular PWO meals were the steak and cake, a protein drink with 2 poptarts ect. It basically what was ever the popular supps at the time as most of these trends come from supp companies or those who sell them.

i agree, i think the PWO shake is overhyped by supplement companies lookin to cash in...i have seen the studies that show increased protein synthesis when a combo of protein/carbs is ingested after working out, but they dont tell you how
the person ate before the workout...my feeling is that most of us are already eating 5-6 meals and we are properly nourished before the workout as well as after, thus decreasing the need for a huge shake afterwards...just my opinion though...

i know beverly international is not big on PWO shakes, im not 100% but i think they claim gaining muscle is all about nitrogen retention
