I definitely reccommend Kay. They have some cheaper rings there but if you want quality you can definitely get it there. You just have to get the cut and clarity you are looking for and they will certify it an everything.

Another nice feature about kay is that they offer a protection plan. i spent quite a bi on my wife's ring(15kish) and we got it adjusted at the store for her 6 month inspection. It turned out that the very next week, the center stone fell out and we went into the store and they inspected the ring and determined that the prong was defective and replaced the ring and center stone(same cut, color and clarity) at no charge.

This is my experience, i am sure mileage may vary.

anyway, i was in BJ's the other day and i was looking at the jewerly section. i was really surprised on the quailty of the rings and the prices as well.. They seemed to be very nice stuff... I could be wrong but its worth taking a look.

Yeah, willing to bet the first one means more emotionally to her than the second. I gave my wife a white gold band for her birthday back when we were just dating and she still wears it 24 hrs a day everyday. Once she lost it for a day and she was a mess. Luckly I found it later the next day. The monetary value of the ring shouldnt matter that much. I think a lady respects a man that spends what he can afford, and most wouldnt want you to over extend yourself. Spending way too much would have been a turn off for my wife.

I spent $1500 at Kays for my wife. It was some sale item. They showed me rings that were the same cut and carat that were 3-4 times as much. I did notice small differences when they brought out the magnifying glass. I figured as long as I couldn't tell the difference with the naked eye who cares. No one is carrying around a magnifying lense.

My wife is really happy with it. Kay's allows you to "upgrade" (at least they did when I bought it). They will deduct the price of your old ring from the cost of the new one as long as the new one is twice as much as the old one. My wife has never asked for an "upgrade". She is thrilled with the ring.

We aren't rich. The $3,000 - $10,000 I didn't spend on a more expensive ring will turn into a lot of money for our kid's college in 15+ years. That is more important to both of us then a ring. We also got married later in life so material things don't mean as much as they did when we were younger. We aren't trying to impress anyone and I don't need a big ring to prove my love. I can do that for free everyday by showing it.

Save yourself some cash and don't pay extra at typical (shitty) retailers such as Zales, Kay and various other mall stores. You'll pay an extra 10-40% to cover their overhead and advertising costs and get lesser quality jewelry.

Off subject here- but if you have assets you better get a prenup. I can't stress this enough. If you don't have assets it probably isn't a big deal. No one goes into marriage planning to get divorced, but if you own a lot of material shit or have quite a bit of money you can kiss all or half of it goodbye if you don't have one. I took it straight in the pimply o-ring when I got divorced. Don't let yourself get cornholed!

I've heard mixed reviews about blue nile. Some people raved about it others doubted the quality. I'm in the market as well and would benefit from the advice.

Honestly, I'd just look for a small locally owned jeweler near you. Haing a friend in the jewelery business is an important thing if you're going to be married forever. You've got birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, etc. every year. It's good to just go in and develop a relationship. remember Small and local. they may cost a bit more, but they will always work with you and their service and quality will never be matched.

My grandfather formed a lifelong relationship with the Helzbergs here in KC. they grew their little shop into a national chain by maintaining that personal touch. Barney Helzberg sold his business to Warren buffet several years back. It was never the same afterwards.

But one thing my grandfather told me was "It's good to have a friend in the diamond business." I have been buying jewelry and diamonds from Tom Shane here in KC since I got engaged years ago. I told Tom that story and to this day he uses my grandfathers words on every radio ad he runs. "It's good to have a friend in the diamond business."
