I've never heard of it until I read your post. I'm sure neither have most on here - hence no responses.

It is very important not to allow your reflux to get that out of control.

This condition (Barrett's esophagus) has been linked to cancer of the esophagus. It is my understanding if you get cancer of the esophagus it is fatal 100% of the time.

Yes barrets can be fatal, my concern comes when i read a lot of old posts stating of guys having reflux...chronic reflux can inturn bring on the onset of barrets..i was curious if anyone had been diagnosed with barrets...anyhow cheers guys

I had it.

I was diagnosed when I was 28. I had a bad routine of having dinner late and too many nights drinking with coworkers and hitting the sack. Barrett's is the condition of the esophagus after the acid from the stomach has worn it. Since I went to bed without digesting repatedly over years after eating foods that upset the stomach or drinking I got the utlimate heartburn. If I remember correctly there are five grades of Barrett's. Grade 5 is potentially deadly and requires surgery to repair the esphagus. Once the acid wears through and enters the body cavity and gets on the lungs and heart=dead. When I had gotten up for a number of nights about an hour after turning in and vomiting what I ate and some blood at the end I went to my doctor. My doc referred me to his associate gastroenterologist and I had a endoscopy scheduled at the local hospital. He saw after putting the camera tube down my throat while I was out that I had grade 4 Barrett's. It was pretty well worn where the espohagus meets the stomach. I was put on two caps of prevacid each day and given a list of foods that are safe and ones to avoid. In recent years I was moved to Nexium and when I don't have refills I can use the prilosec that is now otc. The drugs reduce the acid produced by the stomach but don't improve habits. I make sure I don't go to bed until my stomach is empty now.

cheers for the reply wynn, has ur conditioned settled or improved now..??

Much better now. I have had to adjust to the lower acid level. Smaller meals instead of big sit downs. It takes longer to digest when on the meds.
