Rubber plates

Anybodys gym has rubber plates weights? Our old gym went out of business and closed down so another gym took over our contract and was forced to go to that gym. It's a nice gym they have movie theater room, tvs on the treadmill real fancy place. N-e- ways they have these rubber plates and they felt a whole lot lighter then the metal plates that im use to. I put some weights on a scale and it was what it is. I usually do 290 on the incline and struggle w/ it but since i've been been working out w/ the rubber weights i do 290 for 2 3 reps. Kinda motivates you ;).

I havent seen fully made rubber plates before, just the rubber coated ones that some places use to keep their floors from getting messed up. The ones you are talking about could either be off a little or it could be totally mental and by thinking they are lighter could make you do more weight.

Ive always thought the Rubber coated Plates with Holes in them for handles were Lighter then the solid steel ones. I never weighed them but the same as you they feel different. I know the Older style steel plates I have in my garage sure do seem heavier then the new ones at the Gym.

They are mostly for power movements like hang and powercleans. I think they feel lighter b/c they are spread over a larger area and im thinking less dense. if you hold 2 plates 1 metal and 1rubber you can definetly feel a difference.

Rubber Weight

I have a power platform with rubber weights in my basement. The Rubber/Bumper plates sure don't feel lighter to me.

i had rubber plates in highschool. they always felt lighter but me and a friend weighed them and they were the same as the steel plates.

My guess i know where all my used rubbers were recycled into

Got rubber plates at the University - rubber plates on the dumbbells too. I've always thought they feel lighter! Because when I come home to my usual gym and lift with the good ol' iron it seems much heavier. Its either a mental thing or like somebody mentioned, the rubber plates are distributed over a wider area and thus feel a bit lighter... Very interesting though!

try this

bench 315 with 3...45 lb plates on each side then load 315 using 100lb plates. the weight is exactly the same but the feel is totally different. i suspect weight distribution over a specific area can make a difference. probably the same concept with rubber plates vs steel.

I believe this to be the case. It is an interesting thing, because you really can feel a difference if you hold the two, yet they weigh the same on a scale

I bought a set of 300 lb rubber coated last year and never thought to make sure the weights were even with the steel ones I have. I have mixed up plates and never noticed. Got them at sears - they were the only ones who had them reasonably priced - around 129 for the whole set. The steels are too rough on my floor in the gym.

Im out of state using steel weights for the first time in 2.5 years and they feel lighter over the rubber....

whacky....

I've tried the rubber plates that they have at the ymca and the steel plates they have at my gym. I get the same number of reps on bench with both the steel and rubber plates.

When I was building my gym I got half metel and half rubber hexs plates.

We have all rubber plates in my gym. The 45's weigh, ....45. How do I know? I weighed them. We do have "olympic" bars that weigh 5 to 7 lbs less than our "normal" bars, and our ez curl bars are also two different weights but I have not weighed them. I discovered the bars were lighter because every time I traveled and worked out I would be a rep or half a rep off on "normal' routines and finally it bugged me enough to take them downstairs to weigh.

I don't like the rubber weights.. I belong to the WOW chain of gyms so i can go to anyone.. One of them carries rubber weights and after a couple of years of usage they are chipping pretty bad.. Chunks of rubber missing from the plates.. The good old iron from 20 plus years ago.. Only minor dings..
