Sick after drinking protien shake?

I don't know if I'm just trippin or what. It seems that after I consume my protien shake it makes me sick for about an hour. I'm mixing it with water so what would be causing this? I've already taken one full jug and now taking the second one. Am I intaking to much protien? I take 2 shakes a day, Mid morning and post work out. I also eat breakfast, lunch and dinner? I'm only getting about 52 grams of protien out of the shakes so my protien in take doesn't seem that high to me. Any help or comments would be appreiciated.

what kind of sickness are you talking about we would need more info in order to help you out.

Also I'm currently taking meds for hyperthyroidism (Graves Dease) which I'm contributing the dizziness to. The meds do make me light headed and dizzy. But it seems like the only time I get the upset stomach feeling is after I consume the shake. Generally If I consume it and try to eat dinner then its when it happens. I'm pressed for time so after I work out I drink the shake and when I get home I eat dinner. So I usually eat 15 mins after I drink the shake. I'll make it half way through dinner and then I get sick. After 30 mins to an hour it passes and I feel fine. The only thing that is different is before the flavor of the protein shake was chocolate and now its strawberry. Kinda got burned out on the chocolate so I though I'd try the strawberry, But it's the same brand as before so I don't see how just switching the flavor would cause this. Also alot of times I'll drink the shake while I'm working out. But it didn't seem to bother me before. Thanks

Don't drink it all at once split it up over the course of an hour.
Sometimes a straw may help.

Thanks HOTROCKS I'll give that a try and see what happens. Does it seem like my protein intake is too high. A coworker mentioned protein poisoning. I'm intaking no more than 350grams a day. Doesn't seem that high to me. About 100 to 120 grams of that is from a shake and the rest from my meals. Thanks

Protein Poisoning???? hahaha.. if that is the case.. The majority of the people on this forum/in bodybuilding would be poisoned..

You have to tell us the exact type of protein powder you are taking... Some types of protein powder have lactose.. So that might be causing you to be sick... Also some people get an upset stomach depending upon the type of whey you are taking.. Example (cold filtered isolate vs. ion exchange)

My advice.. Try another brand or type and see how your body agrees...

Main point.. You have to listen to your body..

Thanks bigguns I thought that sounded crazy. The brand I'm taking is Nitro Core 24. But like I said I've taken it before and had no problems. I made it about half way through this jug which is my second one before I started getting sick.

Not trying to say it's not real at all, but it might just be in your head too.. I'll get a bit nauseated and dizzy if I drink one too soon after a heavy leg day, etc. So, maybe you had one of those days, remembered it when you were drinking it down the next day and now the taste/smell/sight or something is triggering a bit of nausea and dizziness - only from the association.

I still might try a different powder though..

ive notice that lately also.when i pound my whey shake.i thought it might be the fact that whey and L-glutamine cause insulin spike ,so ive read.anyone else agree or disagree with this?

Drinking it over 15 mins time instead of throwing it down all at once could possibly be the solution

Yeah thats what I was thinking too. Just checking to make sure it wasn't something else. Thanks

Try mixing it with yogurt instead of water and take some digestive enzymes with it. See if it makes a difference.

bump,

Digestive Enzymes and Probiotics make all the difference for me as I have a chronic intestinal disorder.

Without them, it's in one end out the other with stomach cramps to boot.

Try drinking it more slowly as previously posted and give it a chance to digest.

i think much of the naseua is due to the rush of blood to the stomach to aid digestion. many people feel that an immediate protein drink pwo is not the best idea bc the blood is still actively pushed into your muscles that you previously worked out providing nutrients etc. i myself have noticed that i always feel horrible drinking or eating anything immediately after a heavy leg session. i contribute this to the increase bp and heart rate along with the massive amounts of blood flowing to the muscle which quickly returns to aid in digestion of the shake you just threw down. i also feel this is similar to when you eat a large meal prior to working out and get that sickly feeling. your body is working so hard to provide blood and exert energy to the muscles being used thus leaving little energy for the use in digestion which the body feels it could just push out easier than it could to digest.

just my 2c...wait 20-30 min post workout before nailing your drink. take a shower and sit down and let your body relax a second and i bet the naseau will be far less pronounced.

i also occassionally see this problem. like others said drink it slower and use less protein if you need to.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help guys. The shake I had this morning went down with no problems. I did consume it slower. We'll see how it goes after I workout tonight. Thanks again guys

protein poisoning would only be a concern if you were getting no fat in your diet... sounds like you have it figured out tho, what kind of protein is it, whey?

"So I usually eat 15 mins after I drink the shake"

I know this may sound inconvient, but try waiting to eat dinner until you are hungry again. shakes tend to fill me up, but take 10-15 mins after chugging them to turn off my "hungry switch". I think you might be over-filling yourself, trying to stuff all your nutrients in at one time.....makes me sick everytime.

hope this helps :)
