I would have to think the motivation would come from not wasting the money on the gear once you've started the cycle. But what helps me is having good, committed lifting partners. They need me as much as I need them. I don't want to let them down by not showing up for a lifting session.

No, if you don't have the motivation, nothing will happen on the gear.
I have lost my motivation not long ago, so I took a break off everything - gym, gear, proper food, etc. After 12 years of training and 10 years of gear, almost non stop, I was totally burned out mentally and physically.
Now, I have been 5 months off everything, and I am TOYING with theidea to get back. Probably in about 3 months. Regardless, I am extremelly happy right now having this break.
If your mind is not into it, nothing will happen!

I feel your pain
I took 5yrs off of steady training at one point. During that time I turned into a flabby, out of shape mess. I was very disgusted with myself. One day I said fuck it and joined a gym. That was 7yrs ago almost to the day.
One day while I was training I saw a poster on the board at the gym. It was for a bench press contest. I trained for it and competed and the rest is history. Right now I'm very close to totaling Elite in the 308 weight class. At my next meet I will shatter that elite barrier to become one of the top 308lb lifters in the US.
Find the time to sit down and think about your goals. Write them down on a piece of paper. Put that paper somewhere that you will see it every day. You must find a sense of purpose and stay focussed.
Let us know what we can do to help. Good luck.
