The Arnold Classic is under ATTACK

Here is an article by the SFgate newspaper that describes the Arnold Classic as a drug infested event and calls out Governor Schwazeneggar as a hypocrite when it comes to steroid use.

While we do know that excessive steroid use can be harmful it would seem the article really has to stretch to find the LONG growing list of dead bodybuilders ie...they are still referring to Mo. Benaziza's death (wasnt that almost 20 years ago ?) It would appear that bodybuilding may be seeking a more public face and with that comes the need to appeal to society....ie...more mainstream conditioning and physique size. (notice the emphasis the article puts on freakiness and even goes as far as to call the competitors grotesque based on an observers opinion....)

Interesting.

Im with you and mainly a persons right to do with they want with there body as long as it doesnt harm others.

But I wonder what the list would look like of steroid users and organ transplant, mainly liver/kidney.

the government just needs to stop interfering, if people want to "kill" themselves with roids then by all rights they should be able to, especially when it is not negatively affecting anyone else

why don't we outlaw smoking and alcohol too? They also kill people and affect people other than the user in a negative manner

I personally don't see the difference between getting a liver transplant for abusing alcohol and getting a kidney transplant for abusing diuretics/steroids, other than that one is perfectly legal and the other is not

just doesn't make sense to me

this thread has a familiar ring to it, agreed, let people do whateva the fuck they want with their bodies so long as they dont harm others, if u wan tto kill urself, u should be allowed

you know they say steroids kill, then they say its the diuretics....

Brisbois, who admits he used steroids during his bodybuilding days, quit in 1993 after his friend and fellow competitor Mohammed "Momo'' Benaziza died in his hotel room down the corridor from Brisbois after they competed in the Holland Grand Prix contest.

Postmortems blame Benaziza's death on abuse of diuretics. Bodybuilders use these prescription drugs to lose water in the last few days before a contest, in the process allowing themselves to appear hard and ripped.

"I quit,'' said Brisbois, 43, who now owns a wine shop in Orlando, Fla. "I had no choice. The sport's crazy. Too much drugs. If I was in it still, I'd be dead.''

GEEZ !!! HOW MUCH SHIT DID THESE GUYS USED TO TAKE ? I GOTTA AGREE THAT THE SPORT CRAZY BUT ONLY AS CRAZY AS YOU MAKE IT ,, THESE DUDES NEEDED MORE SELF CONTROL AND A BETTER UNDERSTANDING TO CAUSE AND EFFECTS OF AAS ,, BE SMART GET CHECK UPS AND ALWAYS STAY INTUNE WITH YOUR BODY KNOW IT INSIDE AND OUT .

Did you ever see the 'death stack' that Andres Muntzer was on? Geez it was scary!

Well I am sure the guys that were not genetically gifted felt the need to go more extreme. I mean look at FLEX wheeler great genetics and it probably does not take him much to grow...on the other hand you have someone that wants to look like him, but they do not have the genetics to...so what do they do, they take more and more.

Just my 0.02

Kenny "Flex'' Wheeler won the Arnold show four times. He admits to using steroids for 18 years and says he suffered serious health problems. Two years ago, he underwent a kidney transplant.

DONT KID YOURSELF ,, JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE IF MORE GIFTED DOESNT MEAN HE CANT TAKE IT PAST THE LIMIT (FLEX WHEELER) PRIME CANIDATE ,, DO YOU REALIZE WHAT IT TAKES TO HAVE A KIDNEY TRANSPLANT

Competitive Bodybuilding is a wonderful Art

But it's one F*cked up sport. It's also one very easy target for any bored journalist to go after mainly because everything he or she will be saying is old news and done so many times before. Yeah, the story got printed in the press but I doubt that it'll go any further than that. Like someone doesn't know Arnold took steroids back in the day when he was "womanizing" like a wild man? LOL. Hell, what do you think made him famous? That's what I love about bodybuilders like Bob Paris - He used steroids and an assortment of other drugs to make himself famous but now he says that no one should use them....hell, they didn't seem to hurt his pocketbook any! If it weren't for steroids, no one would have ever heard of Bob Paris or even Arnold Schwarzenegger (or Jose Conseco for that matter!).

Bodybuilding is still a great sport...but like anything, when taken to extremes, can be deadly...And you don't have to kill yourself to be a bodybuilder either. A little bit of brains and caution can go a long way.

(the preceeding was just my humble little opinion)

Some agreeance

Yes steroids and other drugs are illegal, and yes they can cause health probs. and yes there is a correlation with the bodybuilders that died and drug use and abuse, but not all of these stories can prove a direct cause and affect relationship, in Mike Mattarazo's defense how many people have open heart surgery? How many, numerous! How many people in this world have been on dialysis, and have had kidney failure, many. Did this author once make a point about Flex's genetic background of kidney failure. Nope, why? Yes drug use is rampant BBing, dur, but the only reason it is cause BBers wear it on there sleeve, they are easy to point out. Easy targets. R u kidding me, do u really think that Jason Giambi had a stomach virus and thats why he lost all the weight? Or was it because he stopped using cause he knew he was going to get in trouble. If reporters want to rip on BBing fine but be fair, way too much bias and way too much unlister information. Media is a lot like a sales person, make sure u know what they are selling, the product and what its background is etc. cause it could be garbage
gooey :D

C'mon guys. I'm not gonna say you can't overdo steroids but wasn't Flex's condition that rare disease that hits mainly African Americans?!? I can't think of the NBA Center's name that got the same disease. I don't believe this is caused by 'roids.

exactly!! i actually was reading his biography a while back and he mentioned that he had that very disease thats rare but occurs only in african americans...steriods didnt cause it, but it probably added fuel to the fire..

Alonzo Morning,

a lot of kidney problems comes not from the drugs we take, but from the protein intake,i did some research, and talked to few docs, and one of mine good friend who was useing a lot og shit in his days,he had a kidney transplant and he talked to the doc,and actualy the steroids had nothing to do with it,but PROTEIN,he was 330 lb and not fat.he is a friend of the Dorian Yates.and actualy in our sport, with 500gr-600gr and on of protein and not drinking a lot of water, ouch our kidneys working like maybe 24/7.

Shouldnt we be warning people of the dangers from diuretecs rather than steroids?
