Hunting season is about to open and floods of hunters are taking to the woods. Lots of deer will be shot, tagged, and hauled off to the nearest processor or butcher to be made into nice little vacuumed packed cuts.

For the most part, the hunters will return to claim their deer. However, a good portion will not.

If you contact a local butcher/processor and ask if you can purchase any unclaimed meat you could be in for a heck of a deal.

Most deer will yield about 30-40 lbs of boned meat. Most processors charge about 100 bucks to process a deer, usually with about a 50% down payment for the survice. If you offer to pay the remaining bill, you are paying a.little over a dollar a lb for free range venison. Heck, some processors will just give you unclaimed meat. Just a tip for those that don't hunt, or hunters like me who are a bad shot.

I'm going hunting in 3 weeks. I do my own butchering.

Probably getting 2 tags so I can get twice the meat.

Venison is where it's at IMO

I love venison and I can't imagine leaving all that meat at the butcher. May have to give that one a shot, thanks for the heads up.

Ive got about 6 weeks and Im wacking the first one I see! As long as it is spotless Im taking it so I can fill the freezer up! I cant wait!

I think Im going to try mixing 50/50 venison with ground round this year for something different.

Both! Some stickily deer processors are not going to be open till season starts. Usually anything that is left over 4 weeks is considered abandoned. My favorite time is a week after the season closes before they lock up the doors for the year!
