Is using the Trap/Hex Bar as effective for Back Thickness as the Rack Dead Exercise is?

I think doing rack deads is the way to go. I love doing them...load the heck out of the bar and pull like hell. I don't use the trap/hex bar at all, although I know a guy who does bent over rows with it and it seems to work pretty well. Don't know if that answered your question, sorry.

the trap hex bar is good imo but ur still starting very low with it i switch it up every once in a while just because the grips on it are comfortable but i think that u would gain more thickness from a straight bar since more of the weight is positioned in front of you

I also do rows with mine and love them.
