Does anyone do these primarily? (one arm at a time, bicep movements and tricep movements)

How do you feel the results compare to doing both arms at the same time?

I try to do at least one for bicep and triceps. I have noticed that even when I try to evenly press/pull my right was always more sore than the left, now I actually do a unilateral and an extra set on my weaker side usually, I think it helps, just my opinion I have nothing to back it up except now both arms are equally sore lol

my favorite bicep movement as of lately is unilateral strict on preacher type machine...also like to do unil tricep stuff after my heavy two arm sets

Phil got me hooked on heavy lat raises for shoulders doing them one arm at a time. and i like 1 arm dumbell spider curls, and as long as im progressing in weight i think theyre usefull.

I watched a video of Dante doing one armed, hammer curls with dumbbells using the preacher curl. I started doing these, and have noticed that my rep ranges are almost never the same per arm when going to failure.

i dont know if this is the right thing to do but i do my right arm first because that arm is weaker. take it to total failure, then match the set/rep scheme with the left.

I'm uncertain also? I've got alligator arms, short and skinny, lol...

Thats the way i learned to do it.

The explanation i was given was very simple:

You know if you can get X number of reps with your weak arm, you can definitely get it with your strong arm. So do the weak arm first.

Not saying its the truth, just saying its what ive done for a long time.

Why wouldn't you want to push your stonger arm to it's fullest potential also?

Depends on the weight and how much effort is needed to hit failure point.

If my stronger arm is going to only get a few more reps than the weaker, i will just get those additional reps.

If the difference in strength is further apart, i will just use a heavier dumbbell for my stronger arm.

i.e. - dumbbell curls - 55 pounds in left hand, 60 pounds in the right.

Not to often

The major reason I don't train upper body movements unilaterally to often (Besides 1 arm rows) is frankly they take up too much time. I want to keep workouts shorter and intense for a number of reasons. Also I limit the amount of isolation exercises to a minimum as well.

To me it makes more sense to limit your stronger side to the same number of reps and weight used by your weaker side in order to try to keep some symetry. Its reasonable to assume that if your using more weight with your right arm than your left when you do dumbell curls that your right arm is going to be better developed.

there is a phenomenom...

i remember reading a studying that said the sum of UNILATERAL lifts are greater than the sum of bilateral lifts.
ie. if you can leg press 500 lbs w two legs you can actualy leg press 260 or more with one leg at time so the sum of two legs pressing by themselves is greater than two legs at same time.
has to do w neuro transmitters etc, the brain can dedicate more to one leg at a time then to two is what the study was getting at.
not that i base my training around it but i do think its something to try every once ina while.
and if you are trying to bring up a lagging side, do uni lateral moves and ONLY do what the weak side can do and it will even out after time. i know. i had a bicep one inch smaller than the other and then did unilateral training for a full year and waloah they became the same size. -JS

That sounds like a pretty damn good idea to me..never thought of doing it like that..

Gironda said one arm movements were useless. Michael Gundill uses a ton of one arm or one leg movements. IMO, I appreciate Gironda, but he wasn't right about everything ...

not to be taken out of context...

Lol:D

I have a bad case of Tendonitis in my left bicep tendon and have to go Uni most of the time becuase one arm is much stronger than the other. My left Bi is 1 1/2 inches smaller than my right Bi. Very frustrating and I can never go higher on my weights.
