1. High fever
2. Irritable
3. Not gaining strength
4. Loss of appetite
5. Lack of interest
6. Lethargic
7. Hard time falling asleep
These are just some of the warning signs, although some of these can be attributed to certain disease processes, so get blood work done on a regular.

That's just old age............LOL.J/K.

Overtraining is serious stuff. it can ruin you very quickly. All of those are warning signs you are headed for a train wreck if you don't back off and get a checkup! Good Post Phil!!

I monitor my heart rate, as an elevated heart rate is an early sign of overtraining way before any of these symptoms you listed start to show up.

What type of blood work are you suggesting to see if a person is overtrained?

I personally try to have blood work done at least 3 times a year. It lets me know where I stand with diet and supplements...and I get to see how certain things affect me.

Can't be too proactive.

Bloodwork won't really tell you anything about overtraining unless you get your cortisol and corticoid levels checked but that's definitely not routine in most blood work.

I think i experienced this

For the past two years, until May, after my second comp, I worked with a local trainer in my area. I trained 4 times a week, without fail, an hour or more a session, incredably fast paced, and never took a break. He always pushed me super hard, somedays, I even told him I wasn't feeling well, and he pushed me 'till I vomited. I worked hard post my show in march, but didn't really gain a thing, and I was bulking and eating whatever I could. I felt pretty terrible. I had loss of strength, irritability, some depression, I wanted to sleep all the time, and my body started to ache. I quit with him after these symptoms persisted. I went down to training three times a week, but still didn't feel better, so for the first time in two years, I took a couple weeks off. I feel tremendously better, need less sleep and am really excited about getting back to the gym hardcore. Only thing is, I'd love to find a new decent, very affordable trainer in my area, that really has my best interest at heart. I am pretty sure, after reading the post, that my recent trainer had greatly over trained me. I think alot of people do. I am moving toward the philosophy that three days a week training hardcore is plenty in the off-season. What do you all think?

I train three days a week 2hr at a time one on one off. then 2-3 days off at the end then i start over. can you over train working like that

got it.....I miss read what Phil wrote and thought he was saying get your bloodwork done to check for it, but what he was saying was use the bloodwork to check for underlying illnesses that have the same symptoms as overtraining.

I still say by monitoring your am resting heart rate you can keep from overtraining in the first place. It takes a while to build up to 2,3 or 4 items on Phils list, but once you have 1 or even 2 symptoms of overtraining showing, your progress has already come to a screaching halt and muscle growth has stopped.

better to catch it before it snowballs into weeks of recovery or an injury,

I think some of you guy's, should just give Phil a PM, it would without a doubt be some of the best money you have spent, iv'e never felt better under Phil's guidance, and on average i train approx 6 days a week and no signs of overtraining.
