What does an abcess look like?

Just wonderin' if anyone knows what the start of an abcess looks like?

I took my meds in the delt yesterday and today I have a knot roughly 2cm in diameter. It's reddish / purple in color and slightly raised. It is not, however, very sore. What concerns me is that as I was coming to the end of the injection, I saw a speck of the rubber stopper top (of the vial) pass through the clear part of the needle casing....

I'm not paranoid, it just started me thinking that I don't know what an abcess would even look like if I was getting one...

Can an abcess be cured with antibiotics if caught early enough or will it always have to be drained?

well when you saw that little speck of the stopper did you continue to push all the rest of the oil in?

funny thing is i had the same thing happen last night, but i stopped when i saw the rubber. also 2 weeks ago i had a small abcess on my tricep. hurt like bitch and swelled up, but it swelled up like 3 inches lower than my tricep on the part of my arm with no muscle. i went to the doc and she gave me keflex, but told me if it got worse to go to the ER and get it drained. mine got better thank god. she also said applying heat would draw blood to the area and help the oil dissapate.

Xcel; thanks for directing me to that post, it had some good info... it's settling to know it's not only me this happens to... interesting is that the subject septum I refer to is also a red one on a 50ml Norandren bottle...

The septum was clean, so I figure I should be okay, I'll just keep an eye on the bruising... I filtered the contents into a brand new vial and from now on I'm gonna use a 22 or 23 to draw with. I've never had septum pieces in my oils until I started drawing with an 18g. I think it's just too big to use on a septum more that 5-6 times...

GJ-- thanks for the info, I will try using a heat compress on it a few times; see if that does anything for it... And yes, the piece did go into my arm; I was shooting fast and by the time I saw it, it was too late...
