In the past I've allways stuck to eating eggs or meat through out the day and only drank whey after I train.
I've stayed away from whey as a meal replacement because I was told long ago that whey is "the junk food of protein".
So while everyone else drank muscle milk on their break I drank my homemade scrambled egg/oat/safflower oil shake.
I've looked for info on the quality of whey online but only have found links to supplement ads. Can someone direct me to an actual article or explain why or why not whey is inferior to eggs/meat as a meal. I get that is digests quicker but I eat every 2 - 3 hours anyway so i never really understood why that would make it a bad choice.

thanks

Because the food that your eating isnt going to be fast digesting protein... Whey is ideal two times... After you train, and when you wake up first thing in the morning... Reason being both times your body is in need of fast readily available protein.. If your using it as a meal replacment and you just ate two hours before hand, your body isnt starved for protein because its still slowly breaking down protein from whole foods... If your looking for a protein thats slower absorbing look at casein, but at the same time... there is no good substitue for food...

The 3 times a day i have a shake are 1) Upon waking up because my muscles are in a fasted state from an 8 hour sleep, i use whey... 2)Post workout, i use whey... and 3) before bed, i use casein.

Many people do take a scoop or two of whey preworkout also, whatever works for you.

Most any sup. company that's producing what you want isn't regulated by the FDA or anyone else...So they put a ton of inexpensive shit in the product and a shiny label/title on the HUGE container that contains an even smaller amount.......All hopes in beating out the next competitor doing the same thing...And it's all a marketing scheme...

Go with a company that's true to the name and quality like Synthetek.com
Espeacially if you want some Pure Pharm grade whey isolate w/zero issues.

That's just about all I use for extra whey isolate, ever.

Whey is pretty useful. I dont know about you but i cant fit 300-500g of protein in with just food...
I prefer PeptoPro now cause you only need about 1/3 the ammount.

If your eating every 2-3 hours their are no disadvantages to whey except if you factor in thermic value of whole proteins sources you would be losing out on. However thermic value shouldn't be much of an issue unless your dieting.

Whey a great source of protien and one of the riches sources of bcaa's and glutamine. It also provides you with all the essential and conditional aminos as well that are needed for muscle building and rentention. Who ever told you that whey is was junk is flat out wrong.

When I very first started lifting, I used nothing but Whey protein. Cant say for sure but I gained 25 lbs in 4 weeks... granted I had just gone from 285lbs to 200lbs ( fat loss diet)

Still to this day I enjoy a protein shake immediately following a workout.

I am starting to think i have been taking in way to much protein. i think you can take in more than enough from just food. i was taking is 500+ grams of protein daily and i weigh under 200lbs i think it just made me fat. i am now just getting 150-200 and look just about the same size but leaner.
idk anymore about bodybuilding. the more i know the less i know.

i like ot use whey as a SUPPLEMENT, as in SUPPLEMENT my diet with added protien from WPI. i will use it pre workout with creatine and glutamine, and post workout the same way. in addition to that, every other meal instead of water with my food i drink a shake. i think its a great way to get an extra kick of protien at each meal. if you were going ot replace a meal with it i would mix it with milk, add a banana, and some LBA's. i think in a pinch that would be an acceptable meal replacement.

I've been reading that whey can knock you out of [or prevent going into] ketosis. It all was opinion, though. No one had any references or anything to qualify their statements. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

I've been thinking about...

...starting to use a protien supplement like whey. because I don't think I get enough protien. My diet is kind of crappy because of work, but it's pretty clean -- ceral and fruit for breakfast with 2 hard boiled eggs -- 2 grilled chicken wraps for lunch -- reasonable dinner with a meat and vegetables.

I've lost from 285 (Nov '08) to 250 today. I've got size but still need to lose more bf. I can probably only lose another 20 lbs -- maybe 30 lbs.

Fat?

Protein = 4 Kcal per gram
Carbs = 4 Kcal per gram
Fat = 4 Kcal per gram

So, 500 grams of protein = 2000Kcal. Add in your fats and carbs and you can see you might be over your daily allowable for calories!

Some types of protein like ON Nitrocore 24 also has like 14 grams of carbs per serving so I stay away from stuff like this if I am dieting. I too only supplement with powders. I try to get in at least 200 grams of protein per day from foods and the rest from supplements.

Anyway, I think whey is a good, fast acting protein ideal for pre and post workout. Post workout I add a scoop of casein to my shake. Seems to work good for me!

Also, you do get what you pay for. If you buy 5 pounds of crap for 20 bucks that's exactly what you get.

Mess up, meant to say fat = 8Kcal per gram!!!

Fat = 8Kcal not 4.

Strike two! Anyone else care to guess how many calories a gram of fat suuposedly has? Doh!!! Someone beat me to it.

1 gram carb = 4 cal
1 gram pro= 4 cal
1 gram fat=9 cal

what about supplementing a meal with whey? I work alot of hours so I eat alot of sandwiches most often turkey and chug a whey shake with water along with it...Also I heard egg protein was superior. Any truth to these claims?

Whey also has some immune system boosting properties. I know pharm grade(no lactose, no casein) whey is given to some cancer patients, not sure of all the reasons. It's a superfood in my mind.
