Yanks & Limeys - what do we love about each other and what confuses us?

WOW. I never thought I would see Gym21 being posted on here :D Kensington was a shit hole but as you state people usually just keep themselves to themselves and don't really bother the students. I remember watching a TV program and it had Kensington listed as the most deprived area in the entire UK :D I have been back to some parties in Kenny back in the day. After winning the capital of culture award there was a lot of redevelopment in the city centre and that influenced surrounding areas such as Toxteth and Kensington. I remember going to my ex gf's (Toxteth) years ago and you would have shit houses with really nice and brand new apartments the next street up. It's such a big student area that meant higher numbers so higher rent and nicer apartments over the years but it still has it's roots. There are loads of nice Georgian houses in the outskirts of the city centre and I would definitely like to live there myself (Sefton Park etc).

Fond memories mate.

This was back when Billy owned it. Dangerous man from what I was told but he liked me, I won a couple Powerlifting Meets during the time and he put the trophies on the front desk display with the Bodybuilding ones.

Also trained at Gym21 in Wavertree, the original where you had to go upstairs to the reception.

Back then no students even trained it was all very hardcore niche, so when I was out in town the bouncers all recognised me as the 'stoody' who trained 😀

Bland food
Poor music
Over inflated sense of country's importance

But

When the accent is proper it can make a man sound like a scholar and a woman sound interesting and sexy

The religious and intellectual tradition has produced some absolute gems, like CS Lewis

Sense of humor is off but every once in the while strikes gold

Occasionally produces good films

And the American revolutionary war was most likely unjust and wicked rebellion against a lawful ruler

The bland food thing always makes me chuckle - I think some of the stereo typical British foods (Roast beef, shepherds pie, fish and chips etc) could be seen as bland for sure - definitely have a place though. Good cold weather food! But it is worth bearing in mind that most "Indian" foods that we see outside of India are actually "British" in that they were created in Britain. Modern Britain is very multicultural and the ethically Indian/Jamaican/African populations that have been here for generations are british (except for the views of some ignorant jackasses who can't see past skin colour). I think the music thing we've debunked. Sure, we've sent you some pure shite but you sent us n-sync and my chemical romance so maybe we'll just call it even on the shit music front? 😂

As for the inflated sense of importance; that might be our politicians? I don't know. They just politicians though - same as we wouldn't judge everyday Americans by bush/Biden/trump etc.

I'd agree, the British sense of humour probably does not translate well!

As for the revolutionary war - I don't know a huge amount about it. Not really taught in schools over here other than it happened. We generally seem Americans as kith & kin rather than a foreign entity.

no offense to the folks of the UK, the best thing the UK provides is your Majesty's SAS

UK fitness people are generally far more "hardcore" than American counterparts. We all know some 180lbs 5'10 15%bf twerp running shit tons of gear but barely lifting or living the bbing lifestyle, but as far as I'm aware this happens far less in UK Fitness culture. They are generally more polite to strangers than Americans are. I like the UK fitness/bodybuilding culture overall much more than the American counterpart, even though I'm American.

You see this in pro athletes, their personalities seem sincere and authentic. And the culture is more free of characters that only create drama and scandal, like so many in the US.

I watched "American Werewolf In London" last night. Thought of this thread lol

Ummm... does Piccadilly Circus still have porno theaters run by brown people? I feel like I need to wash my hands.

Yeah you're right; I didn't notice that until you pointed it out. Seems like they have less of the vapid celebrity-worship culture than infests America and most of Asia.

It's kind of surprising just how different British and Americans are given the shared roots. But then I guess a couple hundred years of divergence will do that.

I’ll speak to the films because it’s easily refutable.

Guy Ritchie
Paul Greengrass
Christopher Nolan
ALFRED HITCHCOCK

That HIV has crossed your blood brain barrier because you’re now officially retarded

I worked a lot with the British..it’s all the same shit, y’all just have less funding in general as a society.

That was Soho and unfortunately its glory days as a sleeze-capital have long gone, it's still a very vibrant nighttime area but no longer part of the sex industry.

Piccadilly Circus is a very upmarket area with lots of high-end and flag ship shops. Definitely no porno theatres there!

Very interesting! I bet the real estate prices and business overhead costs are outrageous in Piccadilly Circus and Soho.. on par with New York City numbers I bet!

I think we're more similar than we are different - we definitely hold more in common with Americans than we do our European neighbours in many regards. Sure, there are things that differentiate us which is why I started this thread to kind of explore that a bit.

As for celebrity worship culture we definitely do have that over here - but it tends to be these low brow reality stars who kind of get publicity ironically. Theres a degree of mockery alongside the worship I guess!

I would have thought so. Piccadilly is full of big flagship stores like fortnum and masons, hamleys and a bunch of high end fashion designers. Soho clubs were like £20 a drink last time I was there (where I live it's £3 to £5 typically with £5 being considered extortionate... I think anyways, I don't drink).

I might be misquoting the exact numbers, but IIRC the tinder male to female ratio was 75:25 in the US but like 55:45 in the UK. UK somehow manages to have an objectively better dating market for men. I can't even begin to tackle why that is... only speculate. Maybe the fact that prostitution is basically legal there takes some men out of the online dating pool who are just looking for physical release because it's way less of a hassle and less costly to pay an escort than to spend time on tinder finding the small subset of women interested in casual short term hookups. But it's probably a huge multi-factorial thing that deals with Christianity, immigration policy, family law and divorce courts, and woke-ism taking a very different form in the UK compared to the US. That's a question for high level social scientists, not really forum bros.

In my heart of hearts I just also somehow know that I'd be safer from things like divorce/infidelity/sudden marriage induced obesity from my partner ON AVERAGE with UK women than US women. But yet I couldn't really be able to articulate why either.

I don’t visit YouTube much but have seen a few videos of two I assume British fellas trying different foods from my city in NOLA. They seem to be genuinely either blown away by the flavor or very uncomfortable due to the spice/heat.

I got a good laugh watching them try and peel crawfish and suck the heads. If you’re not used to the seasoning you will absolutely choke!

There's a handful of y'all who love to turn threads into analytical discussions on male-female relationships, even threads that have nothing to do with that topic. Why?

What do people over there think of Harry and his drama queen wife? I'll admit she's smoking hot, id say 10/10. President Trump is the only president I can remember over here with a decent looking wife lol.

Differences in the way that males and females interact with one another between the UK and the US isn't relevant to a topic between the UK and the US?

I said they occasionally produce good films

I assume this list is people you think have produced great films

I have of course heard of two of those guys, but had to Google the others.

I was not a fan of Oppenheimer, but Nolan does have a couple good films, especially the dark knight

the Bourne series was pretty decent

the only thing Ive seen from Hitchcock is "birds" when I was little and I don't remember thinking it was anything great but I was a little shithead at the time so I could have been wrong

is there specific titles you are thinking of here ?
