Contest Prep Question

I am sure there is no correct answer and everyone is different. But I wanted to get some of your opinions, and then that will help me decide if I should pull the trigger or not.

There is a NPC show here in town, and is 15 weeks from today. I have thought about doing it the last 2 years, but the show always falls on the weekend after my annual company meeting/training event in Vail Colorado. So trying to do the last week of contest prep in a hotel out of town seems a little hard. Not to mention all of the food is free, and not the best for trying to be in contest mode.

This year, the show is 8 days after I get back. That gives me the final week at home to make sure the diet is perfect.

What bodyfat % would you say is that absolute upper limit to be at this far out? 15 weeks is a ton of time, but I have not been prepping at all for it, and honestly the last year my training has not been near as strict as before due to some new life adventures.

I am probably the smallest, and fattest I have been in years. I am 6'0" and 216, at 14% bodyfat as of today. I will be 40 this year and I have wanted to do a show for a while now.

I am starting to get back on test/tren/mast and work my ass off to get as lean as I can and as close to 198 as I can. I have never been below 7-8% before and I may need to reach out and hire someone for some help.

I figured I would train and diet for the next 4 weeks, and see how I look and go from there.

Any advice from you guys that know a hell of a lot more than me would be great.

First off hire someone, 15 weeks goes quick especially if your not fully prepared,
I would not start with a tren/mast/test just yet save that for later in the prep.

It depends on how you look now. 15 weeks may not be enough; we need to see pics

Your currently the smallest and fattest you have been and at the same time thinking about competing for some time.???? OK?

start dieting your balls off now, start with test, eq, clen, t3, then at 8 weeks out start adding in tren, mast p, continue with eq, clen, t3 switch to test prop. At 6 weeks add in winni & proviron. You can do it just need to make sure diet is 100%

he said he's turning 40 and wants to do it. Why bring him down? He's not looking to make a career out of it and he can def do it if his mindset is right and he diets properly. He will also look his best ever for summer while turning 40.

I know, it is backwards as hell.

I am normally 220-225 around 11-12%. I started training to do a show in 2012and due to work I couldn't. Then again was hoping to do one in Nov 2013 in Denver, but my wife and I were working on adopting a child and ended up getting that child in October, only to find out she had 3 sisters who all needed a home and we took all 4 girls in November-December 2013 (ages 2-10). So my training suffered for a few months while we were trying to figure out how to now parent 4 kids, and still work and figure out life in general. I took about 2 months off of training and ate my way up to 248 by Jan 2014.

I started dieting pretty hard and I am down just over 30 pounds, and trying to get back to the old me of last year. I have been able to get back to training 5-6 days a week for the last 2 months and it feels great.

I know this was a last minute thought. I didn't know the dates of this years trip till Friday.
I will post some pics this week and get some thoughts. If I do not have enough time, I will just work on being ready for Denver again this year in November.

Thanks Bro,

I am not trying to turn pro or anything. I used to race motorcycles professionally and I ended up breaking 17 bones over the course of my racing. My pelvic bone twice, femur, and finally my back in 2006. I was never supposed to walk without crutches. I was 178 pounds and decided to hire a trainer to help me with my back pain. I got addicted to working out and decided to see how big I could get.

So my goal turned into doing a show at some point. I just want to say I did it, and did well. I don't want to look stupid on stage, but I don't expect to win the overall either. I just want to place, and be proud of the accomplishment.

Here is a picture of me in October 2006 a month after I broke my back (L4 crushed about 3/4") and my right hand for the 5th time.

The other pic was a week or so ago. I was 178 in the first pic and 216 in the second.

I am pretty flat now, my carb intake is pretty low right now. I know you cant see much in the pic, but figured you would see the overall change and know I am not bullshitting the story.

Shit man 4 new kids, work and a late prep! If you can pull this off it will truely be epic! Hire Shelby (I am biased toward him, I'll be 40 and doing the same) or one of the other great prep guys here, dig deep real deep stay positive, set up and aquire a good gear protocol and go to work. It will be one of your greatest accomplishments!
You dont have to be Mr O condition but I bet if you think you have the time and effort to put toward this anything is possible. Good Luck and keep us updated

Crushed vertabrae? This is impressive considering the injury.

You seem very motivated. You will be alright with the right help.

I say go for it. You will never think you look good enough. You have plenty of time to grow into the show.

Is this the Boulder show your planning on doing? With the appropriate prep you should be able to knock off about 1/2 percent a week getting you in the 7% range. I would freeze all my meals in individual ziplock bags prior to your Vail trip and just keep in a cooler. It can be done if you truly make it a priority.

In no way was I trying to bring him down. At 1st his statement about thinking of competing for the last couple yrs, and currently in his worst shape doesn't add up!

Trust me I know how life can get in the way. For most of us older body builders there is a lot more to life than rolling out of bed at noon, raiding moms fridge and only have lifting to concentrate on.
For me 8mnths A year every year, I try not lose over 20pds of hard earned muscle while taking care of my responsabilitys.

I to say go-for-it, You have good shape and muscle memory will help you grow while even staying lean for the show.
You may not be at your best but your sure to set the stage for the future.
( I wish I would have takin the plunge at 40)

I say go for it, if you can get in the mindset to compete and tie yourself down to it go for it. Don't worry about things that pop up, remember there will always be food there to eat! There will always be drink there to drink. If you are going to compete i believe you should give all or nothing (thats just the way i see it) if you are the stats you say you are, it shouldn't be very hard with a good 16 week structured prep to get into good shape! Enjoy the journey brother, its the best thing ever

I would say go for it, but you need everything on point.. as you sit right now you need to lose about 21.5 pounds of fat. It can be done but proper supplementation, nutrition and training is going to be key!

Thanks guys for the positive advice and motivation!!!!

The show is in Albuquerque, June 28th. **broken link removed**

I had 2 trainers at my gym check my bodyfat this morning, and I am happy to say I am leaner than I thought. I weighed in at 213, and the first trainer had me at 11% and the second 12%. They only did a 3 point pinch.

Chest 5
Abs 16-18
Quad 12-14

If those numbers are acurate, I need to lose 14-16 pounds to get to 3-4% and I will be 197-199 pounds.

So the good news is, I am closer than I thought. I have decided to go for it, and just work my ass of for the next 14.5 weeks. I will reach out to a few coaches and get some info on getting some help.

I will update with some pics along the way, I could use the advice.

Thank you again everyone.

Adopting 4 kids!! IMO, You Sir, are the fucking MAN! Kudos to you! Very inspiring! If you did that, you can do anything!

In the second pic, you look good. You can do it with the right help, discipline and dope. Dunno how you broke you hand 5 times, but I'd say: stop doing whatever that is. Otherwise, go for it!

Good luck and best wishes!
