1980 Olympia...who had it?

Mike Mentzer - The 1980 Mr. Olympia was definitely fixed. The promoter of that contest was Paul Graham, a very, very close friend of Arnold's. As it turned out, while the rules stated that individuals had to officially enter their application to compete one month before the contest, the IFBB bent the rule and let Arnold enter the day before! He waited that long because by that point he knew who the judges were. CBS, who was there to film the event for future televising, was convinced it was fixed and discovered that a majority of the judges had either close personal or financial ties with Arnold. Well, so convinced - and pissed off - was CBS Sports that, despite the time, money and effort required to send a film crew half way around the world to Australia to film a sporting event, they refused to air that contest.

I don't think Arnold was in the shape he was for the '74 Olympia. Yuo watch Pumping Iron, and he's just amazing! Here, in 1980, he just wasn't in that shape. Yuo can see it especially in his triceps which look flat, which is particularly noticable when he does the most muscular "crab" pose.

Would Mentxer have beaten him? I don't know if anyone could've beaten Arnold as long as he was in decent shape - just 'cause he's Arnold. He's larger than life (no pun intended).

Have to agree with Dad on this one, Arnold looked much better in Pumping Iron, especially from the back to me.

But what's even more impressive and will never cease to amaze me when watching those clips, is the enormous, even shocking difference of level with today's shows... most of the guys competing in the 1980 Mr O would lose on stage at local contests

Hammies/glutes conditionning was especially off back in those days.

Great clip, is there any video of Arnold in 1974? Not 1975 Olympia in pumping iron. Arnold was supposed to be his biggest in 1974 at 237 lbs on stage, I love to see vid if it exists.

I think I remember bodyweight of 242 at whatever his height was - I do know in those days no one measured bodyfat levels, it was just about appearance.

Agree with yuor comment, Phidias, about the ham/glutes - they just weren't there!
