THAT PICTURE WAS THE SITE OF A MASSACRE BY THE U.S. CALVARY.

I GOT TO HEAR ABOUT HOW BAD US WHITE FOLKS ARE FOR MOST OF THE DAY! IT WAS GOING ALONG FINE UNTIL ONE KID STARTED GIVING ME A HARD TIME.....

SHE SAID, "WASN'T IT YOU PEOPLE WHO KILLED MY PEOPLE..MOSTLY DEFENSELESS WOMEN AND CHILDREN IN THE SNOW?

[ I HAVE A VERY GERMAN SOUNDING LAST NAME] I RESPONDED, "NO, MY PEOPLE KILLED THE JEWS."

MOST OF THE KIDS ARE VERY COOL TO ME....ONCE IN A WHILE I GET A RINGER THOUGH.

IT WAS A PRETTY COOL CEREMONY OTHER THAN THAT.

OH, AND I AM NOT GLORIFYING THE MASSACRE OF ANY RACE..... SO I DON'T WANT ANYONE THINKING I A LIKE THAT!

I CAN GUARANTEE YOU IF I HAD BEEN IN CHARGE....THERE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN A FIELD TRIP THAT DAY.

THE KIDS WERE FREEZING AND WANTED TO GET BACK ON THE BUS....

UNFORTUNATELY SOME OF THE SPEAKERS ARE VERY POLITICAL AND LIKE TO GO ON AT LENGTH! LOL. PLUS, "THEY" WERE DRESSED WARMLY...UNLIKE MOST OF THE KIDS.

I enjoy learning about the culture and being part of the tribal events normally.

The people have been very good to me and I have fun. I met my girl Meredith here, so I am grateful for that. The following are random pictures of the ceremony that was held in memory of those who lost their lives that day.

There needs to be a balance between remembering and honoring the past and transitioning to a positive future. People everywhere are often guilty of swimming in negative thought.

I think native Americans are really cool people. I hate it they got screwed over.

If it was 6 below, what the frick was the wind chill???? I promise I won't bitch about the high today of where I live… a whopping, balmy 32º I thought that was bad until I saw this thread!

JT, these are some awesome pics of the people of that region. The indians always held a fascination wit me. I love the culture and the colors they wear. It looks like a very somber ceremony there or was it just so freakin cold that no one could smile.

I appreciate the somber occassion of remembering their relatives who died that day. I can also respect the rememberance of these events for them. Must have been a great experience to be there with them during this time. I envy you Dave. SOmething I have always wanted to do. And you get to live it every day almost

Last friday was MISERABLE for the kids and myself. Unfortunately those guys who were all militant during the civil rights era were the ones doing the speaking that day. LONG....... lol. The kids kept on asking me if they could get back on the bus.

At one point one of the elders scolded a group of kids saying that there ancestors had less and withstood the cold..etc, etc....

I just think a warmer day would have been better for sure. As it was...I was hopping up and down and had already drank 1/2 gallon of water at that point....I was wandering around looking for a place to urinate behind a vehicle or something! Every vehicle had freezing people in it. So I finally went down by the frozen over river and took care of that and got some pictures.

The culture itself IS pretty cool if people didn't weigh it down with political yammering.

I feel you'd like it for the most part. Like I say everyone [well mostly] has been super cool to me. I am able to ignore the stupid stuff 90% of the time and enjoy the area and people. I am a woodsy bastard so I am a good match. I can assure that most people would be bored out of their minds here. If I can get outside...eat..rest and lift...that's all I need. Most people who come teach here stay a year and head out! lol

You totally get me, my friend. I told my mother and she said, "Oh good lord." Followed by a gale of laughing. She understand the thinly veiled evil lurking just below the surface.

Everyone one I tell that story gives a momentary pause and then cracks up.

You are also right about the girl who was the recipient of the shock statement- She looked at me for a while and then said, "HO THAT'S IGNORANT!" Her use of the word ignorant is used typically here to mean "bad".

Example: "Ho, he was just ignorant to her." "She cussed him out for being ignorant." lol.

It took me a while to catch on to this clever use of the language as well.

Another wonderful example: "He was acting plumb ignorant hey, so I knocked him piss cold."
