I have just deadlifted 560lb without straps for the 2nd time and both times have torn calluses off and it has bled bad and I couldnt finish workout. I dont really want to use straps as I want to compete in Deadlifting in 8 months and need strong grip but each time I go over 550lb my hands seem to tear. What are the suggestions? Maybe I should use straps only above 500lb? WHat about hand strength though?? I dont know what to do. It is a strange problem but one I hope others have solved and can help me. I am 186cm and 118kg at 18% BF and Natural if that makes any difference. 3 years training. Competing in BB and PL at end of year.

do you use chalk?

grip work for deadlift

10 second holds from power rack. Set the bar as high to locked out position as possible, it's not a back exercise. Use 100-150 lbs more than you can deadlift and have a training partner count outloud 10 seconds. put it down wait 60 seconds and go again. 3-4 sets of these once a week will do the trick.

Ok first thing is first make sure after you deadlif you soak your hands in warm water. If your callous is to thick they will rip no matter what. I use to take a nail file after soaking them and file them down a tad bit as I know how bad it hurts to rip them off as I did it during a record Deadlift of 745, I did it twice because first time I ripped them then I had to tape them up and do it again.

Hand or Grip strength the best things are plate holds, grab a 25,25, or a 45 depending on your grip and use only your finger tips to pinch and hold the plates for as long as you can for two or three sets. Also one arm deadlife stand so your one leg left or right is next to the bar as you stand there and grip the bar in the midle as you would a DB and deadlift and hold the weight in a erect stance for 30 seconds and work until you reach mins. I hope that makes sense.....these do work very well as I know strongmen and PL who do both. Later bro and congrats on the DL

Get a pumice stone and keep those calluses under control; brick and/or sandpaper works fine if you don't want to buy a pumice stone for manly reasons.

Once you get a tear: clean it out with alcohol, dab it dry with a sterile gauze pad, and then superglue the callous back on. That will hold quite well.

Very good advice here. Keep those calluses from getting too thick. The only bleeding you want is on the front of your shins from pulling that heavy weight up. ;)

Go out and get the pumice stone, time to get in touch with your feminine side. All joke aside the pumice stone will fix the probs. soak hands in warm soapy water, pref. dishwashing liquid for about ten minutes and dry off. then pumice the spots until they are smooth. Should solve the tearing. The rack pulls for grip strength is good, also try pinch gripping plates and carry them around the gym. Might look funny but it will improve grip. I own a gym and do this all day long when the dickheads forget to put plates away. Works a treat.

All right, I am going to go now and get a pumice stone. Do they make one for men? Kidding. THanks for advice guys.

If you ever watched those Worlds Strongest Men competition, you'd see some of those guys litterally rip the skin off the palm of their hands. Has nothing to do with strength or how your caluses are. It's the high weight.
