Do you still deadlift?

Pulled an all-time PR of 565 x 10 on Smith rack deadlifts yesterday.

Snatch grip deads really are awesome. I do feel them big time in hams but man it crushed upper back. Thanks for whoever recommended those I totally forgot about them.
Snatch deads are wild - a humbling exercise for sure

I hope to hell that those weights are in KGs ;)
haha, yes we live in china so everything in kilos. I don't have any 100lb male friends.

Did 3/4 deadlines back in the day. Never added any size to my shitty traps. Overrated movement in my opinion

About 8 months after herniating my disc doing deads, I was doing some light squats with 225lbs ,herniated the same disc again. It was bad both times. Right leg shrunk down and foot got totally numb.
Currently have sciatica (i think), left leg is weak AF.

Seems like herniated discs go hand in hand with DLs from reading the replies.

Another week, another record - pulled 575 x 8 today, an all-time PR. My right elbow is recovering from pretty severe tendinitis so I think not going all out heavy on chest and shoulder pressing is helping me make more progress on my pulling movements. And I'm happy to still have some lat veins in the 280s.

I love you bro but smith racks aren't something to brag about 😶‍🌫️

I mostly do racks. Start from the mid shin usually. Love those more for back than floor deads. Its all back. No real hip or leg help. Just all back and trapz. I do them from the floor ever so often. Back around April I got 615 for a single. I'm 51 so I think that is pretty damn good for my age. Lol. I weigh about 260. Sometimes I just like to hit them from the floor. I think it brings out the Caveman in me. Its a total ego/feeling thing. 😁

Pulled today at the end of upper. Took some discipline as I was gassed. But added weight and got an extra rep. Almost puked from the belt pressure which is not common. Maybe I’ll start going belt less as a ways to govern the weight also. Pulling every other upper day alternating stiff leg w conventional for 1 set.

I think as I’ve gotten older it isn’t the physical fatigue that gets me but the big CNS hit from a balls out deadlift, leg press, etc. I feel like I only have so many total failure sets in me per session and a leg press, deadlift, squat, heavy row wipes me more than pressing, arms, etc and I just need to pick and choose my spots and watch volume surrounding it.

Chest 2 sets
Shoulders 2 sets
Tris 2 sets
Pulldown 2 sets
Row 2 sets
Stiff leg dead 1 set
Abs 3 sets

Due to my early stage degenerative disk disease in lower back I abandoned deadlifts for rack pulls from below the knee and where the bottom of the 45lb plate is appx 5-6 inches above the floor. So much better a movement especially for those older guys in my personal opinion.

Seems like herniated discs go hand in hand with DLs from reading the replies.

1) some probably had a herniated disk before the “injury” that led to a lumbar x-ray. It’s pretty common in athletes to have mild/moderate herniated disks. It’s only when it’s nailing a nerve root that your absolutely crippled.

2) many back injuries are because of not knowing how to “brace”
The abdomen properly….or train it to be better.

if you never trained 90/90 breathing HARD and learned how to make a cannonball gut…your losing a lot of energy through trunk flexion. = back owies

Don't even want to post videos after watching @275bills 😂 but recorded this set yesterday. I’m having fun with deadlifts cause my kid is getting real strong. We’ve been training 8 months, last month he did 1 rep 405 and currently we’re adding 10 lbs every workout which is every 8 days for deadlifting. Currently doing 3 sets of 5 reps With 335lbs.

*Central nervous system has left the chat*

I miss conventional deadlifts, probably the most fun lift out there, I just remember it destroying my CNS and recovery.

That's goals though man (lifting with your kid). Hoping when I have a kid that he lifts with me one day.

Yep, it’s one of my favourites still. I just don’t super heavy anymore. Dead’s are the original core training and more versatile than people realize

My glutes and hams made big strides even during a prep when I added a posterior leg day and did SLDL second to last. Full workout was typically
  • Lying leg curl: pyramid 20-15-12-10-8 final set double drop with partials
  • Seated leg curl: pyramid to rest-pause set
  • 45 deg. Back (glute) raise: work up to a big set against bands + holding a DB, usually double or triple drop ending with just body weight
  • SLDL, “quiet” style (control eccentric enough to where the weight barely makes a sound) - top 6-10, backoff 8-12
  • Hammer hip press: pyramid to 15-20 bilateral, then alternating 5x5 cluster unilateral
I’ve stopped doing heavy pulls right now, but for growing glutes on this day, they were productive.

Here’s a video from 3.5 weeks out of last years nationals prep. DL variations are the one thing that feels better when this light and lean. Start position is perfect with a smaller midsection.

holly crap I was thinking he was doing 495 and was incredibly impressed with that sort of form....585 is unreal doing it like that.
