How do you cope with sickness?

hey guys,

Currently, there is a wave of influenca/covid/whatever here in germany and it is a quite tough virus.
I was bedridden from the 19th to 23th january and had to skip gym for 9 days to feel somewhat well again.
The thing is, i never got really healthy after that again. There were 2-3 days were i felt fine, then the throat hurt again, then only some sniffles,
now since thursday i am fighting with bronchitis.
The time when ive skipped gym i had a fever and going to the toilet from my bed was already a chore.
Since then, i have no fever but above mentioned stuff.
How do you proceed with being ill but not that ill that you are bedridden?
do you work out? (i have a homegym, i could do it here without hurting anyone)
Is it scientificly proven that working out intense (i dont want to bother with 50% intensity or crap like that) hinders recovery from sickness?

to be honest, this shit strains me physically but also mentally because i really just wanne work out...
thanks!

If you don't have a fever and are past being contagious just go in and do a pump day especially if you have bronchitis. You will be fitting for air the whole time if you go full throttle.

I just had to take several weeks off due to a couple different serious injuries. I love the gym and it drives me crazy to miss a workout but I physically couldn't train even if I wanted to. I'm back in the gym now but looking back the break done me well. I probably lost a little muscle and definitely some strength but overall nothing alarming. Something I kept reminding myself is that u recover and grow while u rest. Something I would recommend for u to do is keeping your nutrition in order during your time off and don't let it drift off to far. Stay positive and focused and before long you will be back in the gym doing what u love.

I'll usually just do some light cardio, try to get as much rest as possible, double up on the vitamins, and my appetite usually goes to shit when im sick so ill get a lot of calories through liquids. not sure if theres much else to do if its viral

if its bacterial, antibiotics as wwell with prebiotics and probiotics

the flu has been spreading like wildfire here lately

Just went through it and my last day of training was the 12th. Fever, zero energy, no appetite, shortness of breath.

Was feeling pretty good yesterday, despite getting winded easily, but today will be my first day training again. I feel weak still, but will give it hell. I’m down 4lbs and trying to stay hydrated.

I just look into it like this : i have a fever : kinda like clen up your body temperature, I am always leaner after few days of fever. Cant complain about it 😉

thanks guys.
Being addicted to the gym is so frustrating.
I know i would make better gains taking rest days/days off when im sick etc but its mentally so tough.. "normal" people would never understand.
Ive rested yesterday and ive decided that ill take today and tomorrow also off..
it sucks since the last half year has more downs than ups. First triceps tendon surgery, then when im at the peak of my training again and training is progressive again ill get sick as fuck.. frustrating

I had pneumonia...they talk about the flu...but pneumonia is no joke. I still went in and did cardio, slept alot, fruit, even had to take antibiotics. Skipped the weights but light cardio helped

Your right ....no joke having pneumonia.
My father almost died recently from pneumonia.

To M@NU, basic daily walks outside in fresh air might help you feel better.

Speedy recovery!

I never had problem getting back to the gym after normal viruses, colds, flu etc but when i got that covid 3 years ago man it effed me up big time.

It seemed like a normal flu with light fever and bone pain for like 5 days but when i returned to gym i couldn't train like i used to for like a month afterwards.

I was doing just a couple working sets and i was completely drained and if i played tough and tried to break through then i returned home and felt like death for 2 hours. I remember lying in my bed staring at the ceiling, feeling tired af.

Now in your case i don't know what's going on but i feel your frustration. You could try megadosing vitamin C, D3, zinc etc to boost your immune but this might had helped when you started experiencing the symptoms. Hope you get well soon man.

I'm fighting an upper respiratory infection right now. Coming to the end of it, bit not quite there yet. I'm going too try and do some cardio today. I'm down a few pounds and at a weight I havent been in years. Mostly from no appetite so I'm sure that won't last.

My mother died a little more than a month ago and I think this is the result of the stress and not taking great care of myself immediately afterwards.

I took it as an opportunity to get caught up on sleep and rest. I get not wanting to be out of the gym for a long period of time, which for many of us is just a few days. But I have got a lot better at listening to my body an resting when needed as I have got older.

All three of my kids have colds and one just had the stomach bug. Been mega dosing homemade elderberry every day and knock on wood, I haven’t got sick yet. Give your body time to recover and then get back to your routine. Hydrate, try to eat as healthy as possible and get some extra sleep if possible

thanks to all of you
and thanks @Eddie. .
Ive felt the same the few days i was in. I always barely finished training (but i was extremely gassed), got home and first had to lie on the couch.
i am megadosing NAC + Inj. l-glutathione since yesterday hopeing this will help. Vitamin C is always in @3g, also zinc at 50mg
and to everyone else whos sick right now:
get well soon

Got a bastard of a virus, down 2+ weeks and pneumonia now. Sucks. I'm pissed off. Obviously impacts work/home/gym everything. Lost 12-15lbs and I even threw in haagen Daas pints for pure calories. Try to get healthy and do what you can. Nice impromptu cut (not ideal method) but cost some muscle and strength. #1 get healthy #2 do what you can for your mental health (just finished lifting now - light) #3 it comes back fast once you are healthy so focus on #1. Just part of life. Grind through. Fuck em.

I don't have any advice but I feel for you. I turn into one grumpy mf when I can't lift. I also have a home gym and sometimes I'll try and power through despite being sick and usually regret it. I might feel great during the session but after I'll just feel that much more hammered into the ground.

I have two young kids and they're constantly sick... Which means I'm constantly sick. It really sucks that they get over it in a couple days yet I'll be under the weather for a week.

I used to push through and suffer through some shitty workouts. Nowadays if I’m sick I do not workout because it’s just a waste for me. If you’re sick then let your body rest and heal!!!!!!!

I have trained while i have had pneumonia, but i was younger then and hell bent on growing. Poring sweat and breathing hard while trying to get through a set of 10 with 25 pounds DB on the curl can be tougher then it sounds. Training with pneumonia probably didn't do me any good other then teach me to endure and go on, which can also be bad. I have never missed more then 2 days from actually being sick. Been sick 3 times in the last 7 years twice was covid i am sure. And a couple weeks ago i had some stomach issue and diarrhea. Didn't figure trying to push weights while keep my sphincter as tight as i could would work out well. So i didn't go in for 2 days then felt better and returned to the gym. Probably wasn't as cured as i thought as 2 days later at home i trusted a fart and shouldn't have.

20,000iu Vitamin D3/day along with 200-400mcg K2 mk-7 (back it down to 10k after you're better)

50mg Zinc Glycinate/day

If it helps, here’s some info from ChatGPT-
Summary- you can bounce back from a few weeks of no training fairly quickly. Hope it helps.

“Several studies have investigated muscle loss during periods of detraining, particularly focusing on bodybuilders and strength-trained individuals. Here’s a summary of key findings:

1. Short-Term Detraining (Up to 3 Weeks): Minimal Impact
Muscle Thickness and Strength: A study involving adolescent athletes found that a 3-week detraining period did not significantly affect muscle thickness, strength, or sports performance, regardless of the prior resistance training regimen.Â

Muscle Atrophy Prevention: Research indicated that supplementation with 5′-UMP (a nucleotide) during a 1-week detraining period helped inhibit muscle atrophy, suggesting potential benefits in preventing early muscle loss during short-term inactivity.

2. Medium-Term Detraining (3 to 10 Weeks): Noticeable Changes
Strength and Muscle Mass: A systematic review highlighted that while strength gains from resistance training were maintained after 16–24 weeks of detraining, they significantly declined after 32 weeks. Unfortunately, there was insufficient data to conclusively determine the effects on muscle hypertrophy.

Muscle Quality: Research demonstrated that both young and older adults experienced significant increases in muscle strength and volume after strength training. Notably, muscle quality remained elevated above baseline levels even after 31 weeks of detraining, except in older women.Â

3. Long-Term Detraining (Beyond 10 Weeks): Significant Declines
Strength and Size Recovery: A study found that after a 10-week detraining period, individuals were able to regain their previous muscle strength and size within 5 weeks of retraining. This suggests that while prolonged breaks can lead to significant losses, muscle memory facilitates rapid recovery upon resumption of training.

Implications for Bodybuilders:
Bodybuilders and strength-trained athletes may experience minimal muscle loss during short-term breaks (up to 3 weeks). However, as the detraining period extends beyond this, noticeable declines in muscle mass and strength can occur. The concept of “muscle memory” indicates that previously trained muscles can regain size and strength more quickly upon retraining, due to lasting changes at the cellular level.

In summary, while short breaks may have minimal impact, extended periods without training can lead to significant muscle loss. Nonetheless, the body’s ability to quickly regain lost muscle upon resuming training offers a reassuring perspective for those concerned about taking time off.”
