This is one of my favorite pieces of equipment for thigh training - it's pretty much a horizontal leg press. You don't have to load crazy amounts of plates on it to make it heavy.
To me it feels like a deep squat but without any back involvement.

I would guess they're somewhat rare though -I've only seen the one at my gym, never any others.

AFS WAS A VERY GOOD EQUIPMENT COMPANY FOR YEARS.. i have used that leg press and it is a great piece.. they went out of biz about 10 years ago or so..

quads

Great machine.
does any one know the carriage resistance with no weight on it?

I like these a lot.

I think Tuff Stuff makes pretty much the same thing.

I'm not sure about the AFS brand, but the vertical leg press was HUGE in the 70's and 80's. It fell out of favor for the 45 degree leg press machines you see all over the place now. Some guys complained about low back pain after using it.

There is a horizontal (sat up) one in my gym but it isn't plate loaded. Unlike any leg press I have ever used. I love it and feel it all in my quads. My back feels supported too due to the angle. Used it 2 days ago and my legs are still very sore. No need to go very heavy either... I use the max but that is only 150kg.

My gym replaced the regular leg press with these two Hammer Strength machine.. I do not feel it at all and so awkward both of them. Anybody experinced this? Also if you load them too much feel like a spring not moving weight....

I really like that second pic of leg press machine, never seen one like that before. Great way to isolate each leg.

My gym still has the AFS leg press. It's my favorite leg machine. :)

Trust It looks good but when you work on it you dont feel it I cant describe maybe some other members who used it can describe. Nothing like old regular press and you can do single legs on it. The feel on those two is awkward

Sick strong and shapely has one I'm gonna use it now. Btw if anyone is in north jersey check it strong and shapely it's one of the best gyms on the east coast in my opinion

Try hooking some heavy bands up to the on weight holders at the base and the moving part.

I can never find a good foot position for my feet. my lower back always ends up lifting when I go deep or I dont feel on my mid foot?

There is one at Old School Iron-Iron Asylum in Old Brooklyn, Ohio. Great piece of equipment.

what gym do you work out at shelby?

My gym also has the hammer strength leg press too (2nd pic). That is my other fav. You can only fit 5 plates on each side but thats enough to do the job. I understand why you say it feels awkward... it does to me when doing both feet at the same time. But when I perform them one at a time it feels great. I put my opposite leg on the bar below and that makes things feel smoother. I also slide the seat as far forward as I can to make the movement even harder and get a deep stretch on each rep.

My back is bad so I can't squat heavy and have to be careful with certain movements. But the two I have mentioned on here feel great to me and my back is fully supported. I am made up my gym has them.

May have to try the bands. I wish the old traditional leg press still there....

I tried one foot at a time and loaded it I believe past 4 plates It feel like a hard spring not moving weight more like fighting a stuck mechanism or something and below 4 plates so easy like pedaling on a bike. Basically I cant get a pump ouf of it in quads like I did with reg leg press. Add insult to injury they replaced the regular hack squat that moves up and down and loved too with the Hammer Strength one and It just bends the knees or soemthing Awkward too. My legs suffering now but I been killing squats and leg extension

Ive used that exact type of machine many times. I always liked it. I was going to mention I did notice a sore lower back when I used it but maybe
I was using more weight than I should have.
