Just curious what some of you think. Can someone step on stage without doing any isolations movements? Can a person get away with just basics and the rest it just about dieting?

I'm talking about if someone just had a power rack and a bench.I been talking to a few bros I know who compete and they fell some isolation work is needed. Leg extension, ham curls, seated rows etc.

I just bought a power rack and plan to just work out at home for a while. Her is a list of my exercises I came up with.

Chest:
Bench Press, Flat, Incline Dumbell, Flys, Pullover

Back:
Barebell/Dumbell Rows, Deadlifts, Pullups in the rack on the chin bar, pullovers,

Shoulders:

Presses, raises, bent, lying, standing etc.

Quads:

squats, sissy squats, any others?

Arms:

All types of curls, Triceps plenty of exercises also.

Hams:

Deadlifts, stiff leg, bent leg, trap bar, good mornings, lunges

Calfs:

Toe Raises

ANY OTHERS SOME OF YOU KNOW. LOOKING FOR SOME MORE LEG AND BACK STUFF?

Think about powerlifters.
HUGE guys. Ive personally known a few to keep with theyre lifting methods, change theyre diets, and get cut enough to step on stage, and win in theyre class. You dont see them doing too many iso movements.

Just the basics are needed, IMO anyway, im just young but, from what i know. People can get great results off of just presses (shoulders, and chest), Rows +deads for back, squats, and of course a bit of iso work (bis tris calves) but ive known people who stick with the basics, no iso moves at all with 17 + inch arms, which isnt too bad for no curls or extension movements.

QUESTION

DID YOU MEAN " ANY" ISOLATION MOVEMENTS? IF YOU MEANT ANY, THE ANSWER IS NO, YOU DO NOT NEED ANY ISOLATION MOVEMENTS. WHEN YOU DO BENCH PRESSES, WHAT GETS PUMPED? SQUATS? PULLUPS? THE AREAS THAT GET PUMPED ARE THE AREAS GROWING........CAN YOU TELL A BARBELL CURL PUMP FROM A DB CURL PUMP? A DIP PUMP FROM A BENCH PRESS PUMP? A SQUAT PUMP FROM A LEG PRESS PUMP? GET MY POINT? THESE EXRECISES ( COMPOUND) MAKE YOU BIG............WHY DO ANYTHING ELSE?

I also believe in doing almost exculsively compound movements. I also believe there is more risk of injury in single joint movements. The body was made to push and work in groups, not just one muscle group at a time.

my feeling....

to add to what phil said.....a muscle responds by contracting under resistance. your delts don't know if you are doing a press or a lateral raise. they just respond better to the compound exercise because you are able to use more resistance for them to contract and respond with growth. how you look onstage is all about conditioning.

thats all i have at my gym man, a power rack, dip station, and adjustable benches......and DB's up to 100....... its great.

I here ya, Phil. How does a muscle know what exercise your doing. My thoughts exactly and its about dieting down to see the detail. I was trying to explain this to a couple guys at work who compete.

They were saying you have to do some isolation work to make those muscles POP and get some detail that you want you can't from some compound movements. We where debating over it.They were saying you still need some isolation movements for the back to hit all the back muscles and a few for the legs to really get the separation you want.

Well you just confirmed what I've always believed in.
as a matter of fact I just mentioned this in tough old man's
thread. I never got a damn thing from isolation movements
but injuries.
Always felt muscles were meant to grow when worked together
then isolated. Plus you move more weight.... I'm sure many
will disagee

I should of reworded my question if isolation movements are needed to compete on stage at all. The fellas I know who compete feel they are needed for a finishing touch to bring out some muscles not necessarily increase size.
