Is it just me or am I not the only one to think that no ones looks as good as the bodybuilders in the late 90's or so...I mean no one looks super grainy (Yates, Munzer, 90's Levorne) I mean everyone is super lean, but no one is super dry or something...I cant just put my finger on it...The look is different than it use to be...What is it ??? Or do i expect the pro's to look better than what they do now ???

chris

I think part of the reason may be that people have realized how dangerous it is to achieve that super dry, grainy look that Dorian, or Munzer had. Being that depleted and dehydrated just isn't healthy.....not that anything else in this sport is either, but still.

I completely agree. Branch is the only one today that comes close to that level of conditioning. Thats it no one else.

I agree. When you talk now about conditioning you prob think silvo sam or phil heath but they def dont look like dorian as far as dryness. I agree with the statement about that branch comes closest. Some guys seem to have it in their legs to a degree but nobody comes close anymore to the graininess in the upper body...in my opinion at least.

Although nobody was like that in the 'golden age' either which alotta guys say is the epitome of BB....

I cannot agree more. I'm sitting here watching the Arnold and thinking the caliber of athlete is just not the same as it use to be. Its not only conditioning. Guys are missing bodyparts. I dont remember anyone lacking calves in the 90s. Shawn Ray, Kevin Levrone, Dorian Yates, Paul Dillet, Flex Wheeler.

I miss the 90s. I think today the only real hope is Phil Heath. He is truly gifted with genetic structure and has a complete physique.

Its suppose to be about more than mass. Its about aesthetics, symmetry.

IFBB pro's used to be the elite. It use to be a tough club to get into. Now seems anyone can be a pro.

First of all, health has NOTHING to do with it at all! If a competitor has to do something, whether it's unhealthy or not, they will do it, if it means winning. The reason must be that certain competitors just can't acheive that look. Either too much insulin, or they just can't get that dry.

As far as anybody being able to be a pro... Just tell that to the hundreds that try every year at pro qualifiers. And the thousands more who can't win a state level show!

I think this is completely accurate. Competitors if anything give less importance to their health than before.

I totally agree with you, I'm of the mind set that more is definitely not better. All these peptides and synthol and every other drug that's out there now doesn't equal better bodies (JMO), think about this for a second 99% of us will never ever look like arnold, bertil fox, lou, robby and the list goes on and they didn't have any of this crap around back then, legal supplements were no where to be found like they are today and they did just fine. Stick with the basics:

Real food
Train your ass off (Be consistent) none of this blitz crap, if your body needs a break, give it one
Get plenty of sleep at least 7-8 hours of good hard sleep
And if you choose to use anabolics, just don't get carried away, keep it simple, it's not complicated

(Just my thoughts)

it sure seems that way..but then again, we just had ronnie, who is arguably the best of all time,,, no?

i know very little about slin, but was slin used as much in the 90's as it is now? it seems that would have an affect on dryness.

Bit of an odd statement above ASIM considering theres only 1 show in the UK where only 1 person can turn pro....Bit disrespectful to all those that try and also to the ones that have earned a pro card..

Oh by the way do you hold one??

I think the grainy/dry look is purely genetics. The reason why you dont see many is b/c there is probably only a handful of guys who have that ability. Sure you gotta be conditioned but you could even see some grainyness in offseason dorian so its just a rare look. probably be lucky to see 2 guys with that ablility every decade.

The late 1990's is when the high dosed GH regimens with more insulin added as well.
Insulin and GH were used in the early 1990's just in samll doses because that's all people could afford.
I read a comment in FLEX about 15 years ago by Bob Paris where he stated he used GH, had to go to a doc and got like 2-4 iu's a week. People used GH but it was in tiny amounts from the 1980's and up to a point when Sero's came on then the Chinese generics the scene exploded
Nasser was the first to exploit insulin he won the night of champions in like 1995 or so and was 275, up about 20-30 lbs from the last show he did. He made no qualms about it and let people know.

Today more is better, more tren more test more insulin more GH IGF PGF MGF GGF VGF NGF AGF ...LOL...

I agree, but some of the athletes still have that look-Silvio samuel for example.

i think the guys in the 80's and 90's looked so much better. Now a days the guys just look stupid (imo)

too big, too bulky.. and just look like shit. The guys in the 80's and 90's still looked like humans, not a machine or robot. i really hope to see more guys in the next coming years bring back the "old school look" its so horrible lookin at a guy with a belly, yet abs sticking through it... retarded if ya ask me...

I guess I'm old.
I still like the Arnold, Lou F., Frank Z., Larry S. & Dave D. look.

After taking a good look at the pics on MD, I thought Silvo was very hard and pretty dry...but overall the look is different...I mean the guys from the 90's just had a different type of hardness and were overall dryer...I thought Toney Freeman looked great, even though he was slightly flat at pre-judging...Vic was off his normal form, but still looked great...Branch was Branch huge with great hardness, close to Yates but still not the same...
Congrats to Moe for making the top 6 great body, and good condtioning...For Kai, well he looked good, not great...To be honest I liked his look from the Colorado pro from a couple of years ago (06?) He was very conditioned there and dry...Much smaller, yes but the overall look was better....But Congrats to Kai on a great win in a tough show...

chris

I would love to see some of the pros give up a tad bit of muscle to come in just dry as all hell. I think many of us would.
